Sustainability in Vietnam's Supply Chain

Linh was a young engineer who worked for a multinational electronics company in Ho Chi Minh City. She was passionate about her job, but she also cared about the environment and social issues. She knew that the electronics industry had a huge impact on the planet and the people, especially in Vietnam, where most of the components were manufactured.

She had read a report by the ILO that highlighted the decent work challenges and opportunities in Vietnam’s electronics supply chain, such as low wages, long working hours, occupational health and safety risks, gender discrimination, and limited social dialogue. She also learned that the industry faced increasing pressure from global buyers and consumers to improve its environmental performance and reduce its carbon footprint.

She wondered if there was a way to make the supply chain more sustainable, while also enhancing its competitiveness and resilience. She decided to do some research and find out more about the best practices and innovations in the field of sustainability-oriented supply chain finance (SCF).

She discovered that SCF was a set of methods that integrated cash flow with product and information flows along the supply chain, to optimize financing efficiency and reduce costs. She also found out that some SCF programs had incorporated sustainability criteria into their design, to incentivize suppliers to adopt more environmentally and socially responsible practices.

She was impressed by a case study that described how six supply chain buyers in Vietnam had introduced sustainability-focused SCF programs, with the support of financial providers and NGOs. The programs offered preferential financing terms to suppliers who met certain standards on energy efficiency, waste management, labor rights, and other aspects of sustainability. The programs also provided technical assistance, training, and monitoring to help suppliers improve their performance and compliance.

Linh was inspired by the positive outcomes of these programs, such as reduced financing costs, improved cash flow, increased productivity, enhanced quality, lower environmental impact, and better working conditions. She decided to propose a similar initiative to her company, hoping to convince them of the benefits of investing in sustainability.

She prepared a presentation that outlined the rationale, objectives, and implementation plan of her proposal. She also included some examples of successful SCF programs in other industries, such as fashion and trucking. She hoped that her presentation would persuade her managers and colleagues to join her in making a difference for the planet and the people.
