Sustainability In The UK Construction Industry - Progress, Challenges And Global Comparisons

In an era defined by environmental consciousness and the urgent need for sustainable practices, the construction industry stands at the forefront of change. Across the United Kingdom and beyond, stakeholders are grappling dual imperatives of reducing carbon emissions and preserving natural resources. At Baker Wilkins & Smith, we recognize the pivotal role of sustainability in shaping the future of construction. In this post, we reflect on the progress made by UK & global construction industries as they transition to sustainability and some of the challenges they face.?

UK Targets & Leadership:

The UK construction industry has made significant strides towards sustainability, underscored by ambitious commitments and tangible targets. ‘The 2008 Climate Act committed the UK to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 compared to 1990 levels... In June 2019, this was strengthened, committing the UK to bring all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050.’ Aligned with this, the UK government has set ambitious targets for sustainable building and renewable energy. By 2025, all new homes are slated to meet zero-carbon standards, while existing buildings aim for enhanced energy efficiency by 2030. These targets not only mitigate environmental impact but also spur economic growth and job creation within the construction sector.

Global Leadership:

Alongside 26 other nations, the UK has pledged to embrace the Buildings Breakthrough target, advocating for near-zero emission and resilient buildings as the new normal by 2030.? To maintain this momentum, the first-ever Buildings and Climate Global Forum started in March 2024 as a forum to bring together construction ministers from around the world with stakeholders across the buildings sector including local authorities, NGOs, and businesses.

The Middle East:

Things are looking positive in the Middle East as well. Amidst the global push for sustainable construction practices, Bahrain emerges as a beacon of innovation, with a big focus on environmental stewardship and resource optimization.?

Bahrain's construction industry is witnessing a proactive paradigm shift towards sustainability evident through initiatives like the Green Building and Sustainability Programme. This comprehensive program, aligned with Bahrain Vision 2030 and the Works Ministry’s strategic plan, embodies the nation's commitment to sustainable development. By optimising energy usage throughout the projects lifecycle, reducing operational costs, and mitigating negative environmental impacts, Bahrain aims to create a healthier and more productive built environment.

Companies in Bahrain are embracing green technologies and materials, exemplified by the widespread adoption of green concrete in large-scale projects. This eco-friendly alternative not only reduces carbon emissions but also minimises environmental impact, aligning with global sustainability objectives.

Challenges & Imperatives:

The UK Green Building Council noted that the built environment emerges as a significant driver of biodiversity depletion. Today, more than 90% of biodiversity loss is due to the extraction and processing of natural resources.? To halt and reverse biodiversity loss, there needs to be a fundamental transformation in the how we produce, use, and consume our products and food.

Facing The Realities:

The environmental footprint of the construction industry is undeniable, spanning energy consumption, emissions, and waste generation. Addressing these realities necessitates a paradigm shift towards sustainable alternatives and innovative technologies. From reducing reliance on fossil fuels to optimising material sourcing and transport. Every aspect of the construction lifecycle warrants scrutiny and transformation.
