Sustainability: surface thinking vs. meaningful conversations

These days, when energy sources are becoming scarce, it is easy to notice some patterns in the world of sustainable practices. So maybe you and I already know about these, but here is a summary that I keep seeing around myself while being involved a couple of discussions and projects around sustainability. The interesting part and the reason why this writing is added to my collection of self-leadership focused articles is the obvious similarities between how systems (businesses, governments, and other entities) and individuals (any human being) operate.
Easy to show results a.k.a. quick fix.
If what we are striving for are easy and quick fixes then definitely this is the way to go. Show numbers to convince others that we are making progress and we are becoming greener and more sustainable. Data is there to impress and show evidence. But is it transformational? Not really. Good start? Yes, the first level of awareness.
One way how this system behaviour appears in human lives is the face value. Wearing a mask and showing up every day in a way that is not necessarily authentic or real, but for surely a presence. To show status, money, lifestyle to impress others. Is it wrong? Not at all. It is about impressing others and the story is about others, too. Again, not about the individual and not about the transformational change, just the surface.
The hard core a.k.a. meaningful conversations
This approach definitely requires more work and more honesty. At a system level, this is about being real to ourselves. In a company it translates to corporate culture where the focus is on developing the human capacity and the human factor is in the foreground. It also translates to transparency about values, about where we are failing and what we can do together to change our narrative. This approach does take courage and goes inward to give birth to change and innovation.
At an individual level, this is about dropping the mask. Being human and accepting oneself as a human being. Yes! Human being versus human doing. It is also about viewing status, money, and lifestyle as a channel to live in alignment with values. (For example, money becomes a way to express more unconditional love in my life instead of using it as a tool to impress others.).
Where can one start transitioning to the hard core/meaningful conversations approach?
Slow down and start taking a step back to observe. Allow experiences to emerge without rationalizing or judging them. Bring in hope, compassion and love to assist you on this journey.
2. Be present in the moment.
Take deep breaths often. Notice your triggers. Decide on the response you want to have in every situation and practice creating that response in your daily life. Every moment matters.
3. Connect more with your true self.
You have the best and the worst in you. You have a connection to your true self it is just that there are a couple of layers to peel off before you start noticing it. You have the knowing how to do it. Ask your heart and allow the answer to emerge in the silence.
This series of writings are for you to help you grow to be more connected to your true self. You can be an amazing professional and humble spiritual being at the same time. You have the capacity to become the best version of yourself and you have all the tools you need to make it happen. I'm offering to be a message away when you need guidance and support.
