Sustainability in Sport—Meet the ReScore App

Sustainability in Sport—Meet the ReScore App

To achieve greatness in sport, athletes—from all walks of life and abilities—must set goals and train rigorously. As an avid walker, hiker and tennis player, I know full well the time and dedication it takes to pursue a goal – whether it’s finishing a long hike or completing an exhausting tennis match.

Stretching, fueling appropriately, leveraging training tools to understand performance; amateurs and professionals alike must measure and track what works for them. Indeed, these “little things” add up. A holistic and measurable approach to training is what separates athletes at the finish line.

Important, too, is how we choose where we will run, race, or attend other sporting events. Increasingly, participants and spectators look to the sustainability and inclusivity practices of these events as a key differentiator. (Case in point: the rising popularity of Formula E, powered by zero emission electric vehicles.) Like any consumer, they want to invest their time with brands and attend events that reflect their values, including adhering to sustainable and socially inclusive practices.

Enter the new ReScore app, developed by TCS for the Council for Responsible Sport. Unveiled earlier this year, ReScore enables sporting event organizers of all levels to measure, track, report, and verify their progress on a broad range of environmental and social indicators. It’s the first step in a journey to help sporting events better align with the needs of purpose-driven fans, athletes, sponsors, and host communities that want to engage with events that are more sustainable and socially inclusive.

From a technical standpoint, TCS applied our cloud computing, data analytics, and data visualization expertise to transform the Council’s Responsible Sport Standards and content into a purpose-built, easy-to-use app for sporting event organizers of all sizes. Organizers can now monitor real-time performance metrics via accessible dashboards, enabling them to use data-driven insights to make decisions and accelerate actionable impact.

For example, organizers can use?ReScore?to identify more renewable energy sources, adopt best practices to conserve more water during events, purchase more locally sourced goods, improve the inclusivity of their events, and more.

ReScore is not just for the “big” events, either. It is free, ensuring equitable access for any organization, regardless of its size or budget, while allowing participating sporting event organizers to collaborate and learn from each another. That way, sustainable solutions can be shared and implemented faster.?

Now that the world is increasingly returning to in-person sporting events, the time for organizers to put their sustainability initiatives into high gear is now. As the sponsor of iconic sporting events and teams like the TCS New York City Marathon, TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon, TCS London Marathon, and Jaguar TCS Racing Team in Formula E, we’re proud to play a role in this effort.

Just like marathon training, achieving sustainability in sporting events is a journey that starts with the power of belief. To encourage others to build on that belief, TCS developed the ReScore app and donated it to The Council for Responsible Sport to hasten this journey. And just like you might use a training app like Strava to track and record your progress, analyze, and optimize, ReScore will help sporting event organizers use data to meet their environmental and social goals.

For as much as you need to believe in yourself to meet your athletic goals, you also need to believe in the event in which you’re competing.

Excellent write up Suresh! Live music events could also be candidates for monitoring, measuring, and redefining in a more sustainable fashion. We should target and pitch to well known live events in Austin.
