Sustainability Saturdays: ESG Health Chronicles - Decoding the “S” of ESG

Section 1 – ESG Insights: Strengthening Employee Wellbeing with Accident Insurance & Preventive Safety Frameworks

Current Landscape of Accident Insurance & Workplace Safety in India

As we progress into a new era of employee welfare, the statistics surrounding workplace safety and accident insurance in India underscore both achievements and urgent challenges. In FY2021, over a billion individuals received accident insurance coverage, marking a significant commitment to personal health protection. However, the rising prevalence of workplace injuries—10,733 incidents reported in FY2023, up from 9,889 the previous year—signals an immediate need for enhanced health and safety protocols. Alarmingly, these numbers likely reflect gross underreporting, pointing to a broader issue of injury visibility and response.

Notably, high-consequence injuries increased by 33% to 907 incidents, emphasizing the critical need for robust preventative measures. While workplace fatalities have reduced from 587 to 463, this persistent occurrence highlights the ongoing need for proactive safety initiatives across all sectors.

A distinct disparity also exists between public and private sectors, with only 30% of private-sector employees covered by comprehensive insurance schemes compared to their public-sector counterparts. This gap underscores the importance of prioritizing safety training: data reveals that workplaces with comprehensive safety education see reduced injury rates, underscoring that a solid commitment to safety training is essential for improving workplace outcomes.

The Role of ESG Reporting in Achieving Health & Safety Metrics

Integrating accident insurance coverage and occupational health and safety into your ESG framework is no longer optional; it is a strategic imperative. With the adoption of Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) standards, transparency in health and safety metrics is paramount for progress and accountability. Presently, only 62.6% of Nifty 500 companies disclose adherence to international safety standards—a gap that presents an opportunity for leadership in safety practices.

By embedding health and safety initiatives within ESG strategies, organizations can align their workplace practices with sustainable growth objectives. This proactive stance not only mitigates workplace risks but also attracts top talent, enhances corporate reputation, and fosters stakeholder trust. A clear reporting structure allows companies to identify trends, target improvement areas, and ultimately create a safer, more productive work environment.

Preventive Health and Safety Frameworks: A Long-Term Investment

Implementing a preventive health and safety framework is a long-term investment in employee wellbeing. We recommend the establishment of mandatory safety committees, particularly in smaller factories, along with regular safety audits and continuous training for both permanent and contract workers. These practices align with the recommendations from the Crushed2022 report by the Safe in India Foundation, advocating for equal safety standards for contract workers and transparent reporting.

Proactive safety measures go beyond compliance; they represent a strategic investment in organizational resilience and employee health. Consistent training and safety protocols, especially in high-risk sectors, significantly reduce incident frequency and severity, cultivating a safer and more supportive workplace.

As organizations increasingly adopt accident insurance and preventive health frameworks, they contribute to a sustainable future that prioritizes employee wellbeing. These initiatives align with ESG principles, strengthening corporate social responsibility and enhancing long-term resilience. A comprehensive approach to employee safety—encompassing insurance, training, and transparent reporting—sets the stage for a healthier, more productive workforce.

Section 2 - ESG Case Study: Uber Partner Protection Insurance: India vs. United States

Uber's distinct insurance policies for drivers and delivery partners in India and the United States highlight how regulatory environments shape employee benefits.

Coverage Scope and Types of Benefits

India

Basic Accident Coverage

  • Accidental Death: Up to INR 5,00,000 for fatal accidents during active trips.
  • Accidental Disability: Coverage up to INR 5,00,000 for permanent or partial disabilities.
  • Medical Expenses: Up to INR 2,00,000, including hospitalization and outpatient expenses for accident-related injuries.
  • Emergency Support: 24/7 in-app support and an emergency helpline
  • Mandatory Requirements: Drivers must have their own motor vehicle insurance, which Uber's policy does not replace.

United States

Comprehensive Injury Protection Insurance

Offered through Affinity Insurance Services, covering accidents during active service.

  • Accident Medical Expenses: Up to $1,000,000 with no deductible.
  • Disability Payments: Temporary and continuous total disability payments up to $500 per week.
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment: Up to $50,000 for accidental death, $200,000 for dismemberment.
  • Survivor Benefits: Up to $150,000 for the driver’s family.
  • Cost to Driver: Approximately $0.03 per mile on covered trips.

The contrast in Uber’s insurance offerings between India and the U.S. reflects significant regulatory and economic differences. While the U.S. program provides comprehensive medical coverage and income support, Indian drivers face limitations that leave them exposed to broader health risks.

Both markets reveal an urgent need for standardized protections for gig workers. Uber and other companies in the gig economy must navigate the balance between affordability and comprehensive support to build loyalty and trust among their workforce.

Black Lung Program for Coal Miners in the United States

Federal Black Lung Program

  1. Purpose: Administers claims for coal miners disabled by pneumoconiosis, providing essential benefits for survivors.
  2. Benefits: Includes compensation and medical coverage, ensuring miners have access to the support they need.

NIOSH Coal Workers' Health Surveillance Program (CWHSP)

  1. Purpose: Conducts health screenings to detect lung diseases early and prevent progression.
  2. Additional Services: Provides health information and education, empowering miners to understand and manage their conditions.

Recommendations for Tailored Compensation Protection Insurance

Given the unique risks associated with different sectors, including insights from the Black Lung Program, it is essential to create sector-specific benefits. Collaborative efforts between regulatory bodies, labor organizations, and health authorities are crucial in developing comprehensive compensation protection insurance.

Proposed Actions

  1. Sector-Specific Benefits: Design tailored protection plans that address the specific needs of high-risk job roles, such as coal mining.
  2. Enhanced Monitoring and Education: Implement ongoing health surveillance initiatives similar to the CWHSP, promoting awareness and early detection of occupational diseases through workshops and regular health check-ups.
  3. Health & Safety Initiatives: Launch campaigns to reduce workplace injuries, lowering costs associated with Employment Injury Protection & Rehabilitation (EIP&R) schemes.
  4. Return-to-Work Programs: Establish rehabilitation centers and vocational training to facilitate the reintegration of injured workers, combating the stigma associated with workplace injuries.
  5. Mental Health Services: Integrate mental health services to address the emotional trauma of workers and their family members, ensuring comprehensive support in the recovery process.
  6. Collaboration for Standards: Foster partnerships to create best practices for worker protection and compensation schemes tailored to industry needs.

By adapting protections and compensation programs to fit sector-specific demands while aligning with ESG principles, we can establish a stronger safety net for workers, ultimately enhancing their wellbeing and job security.

Section 3 - ESG Sustainable Memories: Cow Dung Cakes - Symbol of Purity

Reflecting on my childhood, the cherished memories of Govardhan Puja and Diwali evoke a sense of warmth and tradition. I recall the sweet aroma of freshly made ladoos mingling with the earthy scent of cow dung cakes, integral to our rituals.

A Personal Touch

During Govardhan Puja, our family would mold cow dung into a small hillock representing the sacred Govardhan mountain. My grandmother's hands shaped the mold with care, explaining how cow dung symbolizes purity and fertility, linking us to our agricultural roots and reverence for nature. Observing her, I felt a deep connection to our family traditions and the earth.

As Diwali approached, cow dung cakes played a vital role in our puja and havan rituals. I vividly remember tossing dried cakes into the flames, releasing fragrant smoke that filled our home with a sacred atmosphere. This was more than a ritual; it was an offering to the universe, purifying our space and elevating our prayers. The burning cakes not only transformed our environment but also enhanced air quality, showcasing the sustainability of our traditions.

These memories remind me of the profound meaning behind our rituals, connecting us to our heritage and each other.

Cow dung cakes embody the intersection of tradition and sustainability, purifying air, enriching soil, and serving as biofuel. They symbolize purity and nature's nurturing spirit, enhancing our rituals and reinforcing our commitment to the earth. As I light these cakes during Govardhan Puja or Diwali, I embrace our heritage while advocating for a sustainable future.
