Sustainability Round up, October Edition.

In this month's #sustainability round-up, we have?the results of last month’s poll on the role that different initiatives play in advancing sustainability worldwide, as well as sharing insights about the power of specification to build?a sustainable built environment.?

We also celebrate the launch of the Built Environment Carbon Database and introduce you to Dr. Andy Dengel , Head of Environment in the Assurance Group at BRE , sharing his latest work around indoor environmental quality assurance.?

In last month's poll we asked?

How can sustainability initiatives play a larger role in advancing sustainability worldwide?

The poll results reveal that 24% of participants agree that enhancing communication and raising awareness about sustainable practices is crucial. To make a change in different markets, the poll results indicate the first step is to share information about sustainability practices.?

Respondents also chose actions such as providing detailed training, creating customised solutions for specific needs, and forming partnerships to increase awareness.

Meet our experts

Meet Dr. Andy Dengel , Head of Environment at BRE.

As BRE's head of the Indoor air quality (IAQ) and Chemical Assessment teams since 2006, he has also taken on the overall responsibility for BRE's environmental engineering and consultancy teams including Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC); Lighting and Air Pollution.

A particular focus of Andy's work is the physical monitoring of indoor environments, including Post-Occupancy Evaluations (POE) work and reactive responses to problems encountered in occupied buildings.?

He has also participated in collaborative research projects for the BRE Trust, NHBC Foundation, UK TSB (e.g. MATIN, 2013-15) and the EU FP7 (e.g. ECO-SEE, 2013-17) and maintained close links with the 英国巴斯大学 's BRE University Centre of Excellence. Through this applied research work Andy continues to publish academic literature. Andy is also currently an ad hoc member of the?Defra Air Quality Expert Group .

We asked Andy, what is a recent challenge on Indoor Environmental Quality that a client?has shared with you?

“A major NHS Trust approached us due to concerns regarding ventilation and indoor air quality across their estate. This is part of their Sustainability Strategy, which includes assessing the energy used for heating, cooling and ventilation in their hospital buildings, but cross-cuts strongly with the health and wellbeing of staff, patients, and visitors.??

Our IAQ team devised and implemented a programme of week-long monitoring of key indoor air quality parameters across six locations in four hospitals over both the winter and summer seasons. Our results and findings were disseminated to a range of stakeholders across the Trust, both clinical and non-clinical, and the work has already led to further collaboration and commercial testing work.”?
