Sustainability Requires Community
As part of my LinkedIn video series GreenTech Talks, I ask greentech professionals and leaders about their take on the role of community in the global effort to advance sustainability for people and planet. Ultimately, what will it take to unleash an energy or sustainability transformation that touches and uplifts all?
The consensus so far, is clear.
From the ground floor to the information highway, communities are driving the change we wish to see. In this digital age, we have a unique opportunity to build and bridge communities across the globe, to heal the earth and leave no one behind.

Julia Pyper - VP of Communications and Policy at GoodLeap & Host of Political Climate Podcast
"Communities are the whole game. We talk about United Nations Climate Summit and we talk about national climate actions and even states but those solutions ultimately get deployed in communities where people live and work. So, I think we absolutely need to be thinking about stakeholder engagement in ways to get everyone's opinions and locate projects in places where they are accepted and welcomed and give back to the community ... I think it's something that has to be worked out in individual by individual situations but it is certainly something that will impede our climate goals if we can't find better ways for community stakeholders to work together and get these projects ultimately deployed." - FULL INTERVIEW LINK
AJ Perkins - President at Instant ON, Public Speaker & Author
"I believe at the heart of of all of this, communities have the opportunity to create a great planet ... I literally was able to see (growing up in Hawaii) the good communities created a lot of good things and good people. That's where I think these communities that have been able to figure out how to manage the human and financial assets to really manage the needs to ensure that there's sufficiency for the future and growing up in Hawaii, you see that all over the place." - FULL INTERVIEW LINK

"If you're pouring concrete in your driveway, ask your concrete provider, tell us what you can do to decarbonize? Most of the time, they already know what they can do but no one is asking them. The more they hear from customers or consumers, the faster they recognize, hey there is a real opportunity here, let's get on side. So, people and community whether it's government or corporations or individuals, there is so much that you can do right now." - FULL INTERVIEW LINK
Shuli Goodman, Ph.D. - Executive Director at LF Energy Foundation
"I think we all need communities right now. You know what the weird thing has been? Is that I've been kind of out here at the end of a road, at the end of a road and I spend all day on the phone with people from all over the world. I have a sense of community, what their daily lives are like, their families, how they've met the struggle of covid. It's very reassuring because I don't think any of us want to feel like we're alone and while maybe in some great scheme of things as humans we are all alone, we do have the opportunity to use community as a way to stay connected and to build and do things together and to support each other along the way." - FULL INTERVIEW LINK .

President Director - Creating a Sustainable Humane World in Harmony with Nature
2 年The world of communication, from Newspapers, Magazines, TV, Documentaries, Film and now the Digital means are all relevant to enhance the conscience of an individual. The critical first step is how these individuals come together to mobilise/enhance the conscience, commitment and actions of the community. The second step is how to bring the communities together, Nationally and Internationally, for global actions for our common future in a sustainable world in harmony with Nature, Throughout history people have marched together, making their voices heard, anguish seen and call for actions acted upon. It is communities together on the ground that has the Power to force change. The digital age cannot deliver that but it is relevant and can be a catalyst reaching out all over the world

2 年I always wonder. If the people living in 15k Square foot homes, driving Ferraris, vacationing in Fiji, etc wanted to help couldn't they live a simple lifestyle, have a few less amenities, and contribute more to causes like this?
