COP29: Expectations and Realities

The United Nations' annual Conference of the Parties (COP) to combat climate change was held for the 29th time in Baku from November 11-22. At COP29, countries discussed global greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, climate finance, carbon markets, and just transition mechanisms.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the main agenda of the summit with his statement, "Climate finance is not charity; it is an investment. Climate action is not a choice; it is a necessity."

ESG Ratings in Sustainable Institutions

Until recently, companies were evaluated primarily based on profitability and financial status. Nowadays, having a good credit rating is not sufficient for long-term investments and partnerships. ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) ratings, which aim to measure the impact and contributions of company activities on the environment and society, as well as the quality of governance, are becoming increasingly important in today's business world.

Although ESG ratings are not yet regulated like credit ratings, they are expected to be regulated in the near future. A good ESG rating can positively impact a company's market reputation, ability to attract investment, customer relations, and standing with regulators.

Awards Are Finding Their Winners In The Arkas Line Green Office Competition

As part of Arkas Line's "Green Office" project, we are collaborating with ecordingApp to promote environmentally friendly and sustainable living tasks among our employees. Each task completed contributes to reforestation through seed balls.

We are delighted to see that Arkas Line employees, both domestically and internationally, have shown high participation and are ranked at the top of the platform.

Internalizing Sustainability

On November 14, at the "Time for Real Sustainability Action" conference hosted by Aden De?erleme and Resuwo at HAN Spaces, our Arkas Maritime Group Sustainability Director, Serra Tükel, participated in the "Internalizing Sustainability" panel alongside Y?ld?r?m Holding ESG Group President George Wagner, Yap? Kredi Corporate Communications Director Arda ?zta?k?n, and Marmara Municipalities Union Sustainability and Climate Change Center Director Director ?zge Sivrikaya.

The session emphasized the importance of integrating sustainability into company decision-making processes and operations, real-time tracking of ESG data, and transparent communication among all stakeholders.
