Eco Spotlight

Ecommerce Growth & Retail

The retail landscape is undergoing a major transformation with the rapid growth of e-commerce, which is projected to exceed $6.3 trillion globally in 2024. This shift is significantly reshaping consumer habits, with ecommerce capturing 41% of global retail sales by 2027, up from just 18% in 2017. To keep up with the evolving market, businesses need to strengthen their supply chains by investing in technology such as Warehouse and Inventory Management Systems. These tools enable better decision-making and inventory management, helping companies meet customer demands more efficiently while minimising overstock.

E-commerce also presents challenges for traditional retailers, many of whom have adopted digital and omnichannel strategies to remain competitive. Packaging has become a key element in enhancing customer experience and reinforcing brand identity, with sustainable packaging gaining traction as consumers prioritise environmental concerns. Retailers are also turning to returnable packaging to handle the rising rate of returns in online shopping. Building resilient supply chains, investing in scalable infrastructure, and focusing on customer experience through real-time tracking, flexible delivery, and returns options are crucial for long-term success in the fast-changing e-commerce landscape. Key trends include sustainability, personalisation through AI, and the growth of mobile commerce.

Good News Story

A recent study by researchers from Imperial College London, On the Edge, and ZSL has revealed that safeguarding just 0.7% of the world’s land could help protect one-third of the most unique and endangered tetrapod species (four-limbed vertebrates). Published in Nature Communications, the research stresses the need to focus conservation efforts on regions with exceptional biodiversity and species that are both evolutionarily distinct and globally threatened. Among these species are the aye-aye lemur, the secretary bird, the purple frog, and the critically endangered gharial crocodile.

Currently, only 20% of these vital areas are protected, and many are under increasing pressure from human activity. The researchers identified 25 crucial regions, termed EDGE Zones, where conservation efforts could be most effective. These zones include areas in Southeast Asia, the Amazon basin, and the Eastern Arc mountains of East Africa. The study underscores the importance of considering both species diversity and evolutionary history in conservation strategies to preserve unique branches of life.
