?? Sustainability: Everybody’s Business ??
Sustainability isn’t a separate function—it’s a way of working that must be embedded across every role, every decision, and every level of an organization. Whether in finance, HR, product design, marketing, or procurement, every function has a role to play.
Inspired by Embedding Sustainability: How to Drive Organizational Transformation by Pia and Lisen, I found a key takeaway that deeply resonates with my journey: every job can, and should, be a sustainability job.
Key Lessons from My Experience ? Sustainability thrives on integration—not isolation. I’ve seen firsthand how transformation happens when teams take ownership within their functions. ? Change management is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s not just about knowing what to do but about creating the right structures, incentives, and cultural shifts to make it happen. ? The most effective sustainability leaders aren’t just experts—they’re conduits of change, ensuring alignment and fostering engagement across the business.
?? In my own journey, I’ve found that the challenge isn’t just about strategy; it’s about execution. The biggest question I ask: How do we embed sustainability into daily work?
One realization that shaped my approach: rather than trying to push sustainability as an external mandate, I’ve focused on enabling teams to see its value within their own roles. Whether through circular economy strategies, energy efficiency initiatives, or aligning ESG with business KPIs, real impact happens when sustainability is an enabler—not an add-on.
?? Progress Takes Time—but It’s Happening I often remind teams to look back.
§? What were we working on five years ago?
§? What have we achieved since then?
While the pace of change can feel slow, every small win matters. Sustainability transformation, much like digital transformation, requires the whole organization. Some functions, like finance and procurement, have led the way, but many others are just beginning their journey. The shift from CFOs (Chief Financial Officers) to CVOs (Chief Value Officers) is a great example of how businesses are redefining their priorities.
?? Let’s Move Beyond the Silo Mentality Sustainability isn’t just for ESG teams—it must be woven into the fabric of business strategy. The more we recognize that sustainability is everyone’s job, the greater our impact.
