Sustainability is the driver for technology buying decisions. REALLY?

Sustainability is the driver for technology buying decisions. REALLY?

Here is my pick of what I loved and didn’t across the AOPG tech news network this week.

Zero Circle, Wasabi Technologies Partner on New Sustainability Tools for Cloud Storage

Let’s start with Data & Storage Asia and get “ranting”. This announcement is like a masterclass in what goes wrong when issuing press releases. Wasabi used some research to show that sustainability is top of the list when people choose cloud. Not sure what research this is, but i am also pretty sure that are more “sustainable” clouds than AWS and Azure, but it doesn’t seem to be stopping most companies selecting to use them. Bottom line organisation still use clouds based on features, price and usability.?

So wasabi, not really a household name in storage, looked to jump on a bandwagon and announce a partnership with a company that can help you configure wasabi cloud storage to be more sustainable.

This is marketing and PR people making a noise about something that wont make move the needle even slightly in terms of anyone every choosing to adopt wasabi storage. If the wasabi PR team had checked in with the sales team, I am very sure that’s what they would have heard.

If you have read my previous tech news rants, you will know i am a sustainability sceptic when it comes to tech companies using it as a sales feature. This one is no different. Wasabi should stick to explaining what is good about their storage. Visibility of what they do, that’s the real challenge their PR should be wrestling with.

How a Donut Shop Exposes That Businesses Are Still Paying Ransom Despite “Do Not Pay” Policies

Next over to Cyber Security Asia ?and a really nice article by our very own Izzat Najmi Abdullah , who attended a “cyber security escape room” event hosted by Cohesity. The event involved journalists getting together in 2-hour immersive workshop designed to mimic a real-time ransomware attack scenario, where they acted as the response team. With Najmi somehow landing the “role” of head of PR (A bit close to home, CISO would have been more challenging ?? ), taking responsibility for communicating details of the “breach” to the outside world.

The write-up is excellent, but more important is the concept itself of the immersive ransomware attack role play. Increasingly, the executive team in large companies are being held to account by legislation when it comes to preparedness and response to cyber-attacks. These kind of immersive “dry runs” could well become something that executive teams need to do as part of their annual security awareness training.

Inspections from a Drone’s Eye View: Why Drones Are Essential for Businesses and the Inspections Industry

Finally, over to Disruptive Tech News and a byline written by Mohamad Shahriq Abdullah of AL Pine.

There was a time when drones were in the tech news seemingly all the time, now with everyone trying to jump on the AI bandwagon, drones don’t seem to be grabbing the headlines as much.

However, the technology is still disruptive and cutting edge. In this article Shahriq reminds us of just how transformative drones are for inspection tasks, they make life safer for inspection workers, and improve the speed and thoroughness with which inspection can be carried out.

The use cases for drones is vast, and if they have been forgotten in your business transformation journey, it may be worth taking a look again to see how there may be use cases for your business.

According to some that you may listen to, tech and ai is the answer to all sustainability needs and we will all live in a better place because of it. But most do not realise that all this tech is one of the biggest burners of fossil fuel generated by electricity going around. So it is a bit of a vicious circle, you need the tech to tell you that you are doing bad, but you need the bad to help you get the info from the tech. Can we all go back to telex, fax, Nokia 3310s and watching weather report on the news to find out if our sustainability efforts are working?

Urgh... Definitely Andrew. A huge increase in many sectors and especially Tech, greeenwashing their product with arbitrary 'facts' and tenuous links to some obscure sustainability program... Then throwing AI on the front of it.... Sigh ??
