Sustainability By Default

Reading Gartners top 10 strategic technology trends for 2023, it stood out with overarching fierceness that sustainability by default is the new 'mantra' by which tech companies should adopt. To be a sustainable tech business means to adopt a mindset of sustainability by default. Environmental impact is becoming a hot topic of conversation both inside and outside of work.

Environmental sustainability is a huge driver behind performance and quality (according to Gartners 2022 CEO and Senior Business Executive Survey).

Working closer to an ESG focus proves to attract investors to companies and in turn attracts top talent in the market. Companies run on the strength of their people so focusing more on environment, social and governance is integral.

So, what is ESG?

ESG stands for Environment, Social and Governance and is a term used for a quantifiable assessment of sustainability. ESG strategy focuses on reaching certain performance metrics, setting measurable goals and conducting audits that relate to the above areas.

What tech can help us be more sustainable?

1. Anything that allows us to reduce our #energy #consumption so for example, technologies built with this in mind.
2. Efficient designs and product that help with reducing #waste.
3. Anything that is created with #sustainability and reducing our #carbonfootprint in mind.

To explore this for the lay person and I speak with my own understanding in mind, that #sustainability is about reducing our carbon footprint and #environmental impact on the planet. To name a few; recycling, renewable energy, cautious energy usage, shopping local, plastic consumption and vegetarianism/veganism (the list goes on).

However, in the world of work the impact of small changes to be more ethically and environmentally focused will have a huge impact yet can often go unnoticed. ESG will count for the measurement of which a company is adhering (or not) to the three areas.

For technology specifically, we look at the power of #cloud services, #AI, #automation and #robotics as being more sustainable.

As explored by Devoteam, this is the ability to scale technology, to share resources, the elimination of physical assets, in sum the reduction of the total cost of ownership of IT and enabling new solutions for smart grids, buildings, optimized logistics, and dematerialization, have an impact on global carbon emissions.
