Sustainability is Dead? Long Live Degrowth????

Hey LinkedIn fam! ?? I'm thrilled to announce the release of a new episode on Bionic Planet, where we dive deep into the world of ecological economics, systems thinking, and the limits to growth. In this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with three ecological economists - James Pittman ?? , Matt Orsagh , and Steve Rocco - who shared their insights on the role of markets and financial instruments in a period of ecological overshoot.

In this episode, we chew over themes that have been kicking around since the 1970s but are now more relevant than ever:

1. Rethinking GDP as an Indicator of Success

Simon Kuznets, the economist who invented GDP, never intended it to be the measure of economic health that we treat it as today. The guests highlighted the importance of questioning the traditional growth-based paradigm and focusing on optimizing the economy for health and well-being instead.

2. Understanding Overshoot and Tipping Points

The conversation delved into the concepts of overshoot and tipping points - one we can pull back from, and the other, we cannot.

3. Embracing Degrowth for a Sustainable Future

The guests debated the concept of degrowth as a potential solution to the current environmental challenges we face. While acknowledging the complexities and challenges associated with transitioning to a degrowth model, they emphasized the importance of designing a sustainable future that prioritizes ecological well-being and collective optimization over relentless economic growth.
