Sustainability & Construction Newsletter #10

Welcome to the tenth edition of the Sustainability & Construction newsletter!

This week we explore topics such as the NHS Net Zero Building Standard, the NABERS rating for buildings, responsible offsetting, and biodiversity.

As well as rounding up the hot topics hitting the headlines, we will be hearing from some of Mitsubishi Electric's very own, as we look at the latest articles from the Hub - covering talking points from stranded assets to low carbon heating.

Stranded – How your buildings can end up unlettable

Around 80% of the commercial buildings that need to be Net Zero by 2050 are already built. That means that the owners of these premises need to be putting plans in place to improve the energy efficiency and lower the carbon footprint, otherwise they will end up with a property that they cannot let and which won’t attract the selling price they think it should. Otherwise known as a stranded asset, these buildings risk falling behind the increasingly stringent environmental requirements and therefore prove less desirable.??

Two more pillars on the way to Net Zero

In his latest article for the Hub, Chris Newman continues his analytical review of the Net Zero Report. Having already explored what the report set out to highlight, share, demonstrate, and how it was structured in his previous blog post, Chris's latest piece takes a look at some of the detail within it and how that relates to the HVAC market.

The future of heating is low carbon

In this article for the Hub, Kevin Wilcott from our Service and Maintenance team, looks at the increasingly important role of commercial heat pumps. Achieving the government’s ambitious target of 600,000 heat pumps each year by 2028 requires a tenfold increase in the number of installations over the next five years, a considerable challenge. Yet, Kevin argues, in many ways the technology itself is not the issue. There are plenty of heat pump options on the market but the gap lies more in the expertise needed to correctly design, specify, install and maintain these products.?

Local authorities must decarbonise UK public buildings ‘five times faster’ to meet Net Zero targets

The UK government is currently missing one of its core Net Zero commitments to reduce CO2 emissions by 101 years, according to the Public Building Energy Efficiency Report. CO2 emissions from public buildings need to be reduced five times faster than they’re currently falling to meet the target of a 75% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2037. The report projects that nine out of 10 (91%) public buildings will need upgrading in the next seven years if they’re to meet Net Zero targets.
