Sustainability career trends - 2023

2023 - Chaotic, confusing & exciting!

These are the words I'd would use for the market right now. I speak to people in the emerging market of ESG and sustainability every day, from seasoned veterans, entry level grads to high level transitioners. Even the name ESG and sustainability confuses people!

Where does it all fit - for you as a candidate, for companies/organisations and within companies? Who is doing what and where?

The multiple overlapping markets and speed of change/innovation make it an exciting field of opportunity but clarity of purpose, focus and skills is required to make your mark.

What to do?

• Figure out your level of expertise in this space. Are you the decades long expert - highly valued/know your worth or the change manager with emerging knowledge?
• What is your area - tech, infrastructure, property, energy, start up, finance/investment?
• Which area? - generalist, biodiversity, circular economy, supply chain/modern slavery, energy transition, engineering/technical and more! (confusing amount of opportunity and scope, ehh?)
• What is your profile saying? Do people know what you do? Is YOUR net zero message clear?
• What is your origin story? Where does your interest/purpose/passion come from? Storytelling is becoming a key skill.
