Here’s what happened last week in our Sustainable World;

?Bioenergy Plants: The Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) has approved a reimbursable grant of $1 million to NewAfrica Impact Ltd to prepare two bioenergy plants in Sierra Leone and Ghana that will each output 5 megawatts of electricity and 11 megawatts of heat. The reimbursable grant will strengthen the project’s bankability by supporting technical feasibility studies and regulatory structuring. Read more: https://bit.ly/3v1Hn3J

?Sustainable Manufacturing: Artificial intelligence (AI) is helping many different industries and is having a particularly strong impact on the automotive industry. Among the most exciting cases are those for fully autonomous vehicles, but that’s not the only area where AI is having an impact. For example, Microsoft and Mercedes-Benz are working together to improve automobile production efficiency. At the AWS re:Invent cloud conference this week, BMW Group outlined the impact that AI has had on its organization and detailed emerging use cases where AI will yield future positive business outcomes. ?ESG Assessment: NatWest Group has partnered with The Disruption House (TDH), a provider of risk analytics on ESG and business resilience of SMEs, to help UK-based SMEs become more sustainable. TDH has developed an ESG assessment tool, aiming to help companies tackle climate change and future-proof their businesses. ?Recycling Mobile Devices: Leading mobile network and technology communications company, Vodafone, has partnered with the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) in the launch of the One million phones for the planet campaign that aims to encourage customers to trade in older devices, enticed by Vodafone's competitively priced trade-in offers, as part of a larger circular economy plan for recycling mobile devices. ?Biological Diversity: Agreement over mobilizing $200 billion, eliminating plastic pollution, and reducing the use of pesticides are among the major issues on which countries are negotiating in COP 15. There are numerous organizations and treaties to protect nature and biodiversity. Most of these treaties are voluntary, but some, like the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), are legally binding. ?Plastics Ban: Canada's ban on single-use plastics, starting with the manufacture and import for sale of a number of products, comes into effect later this month. The prohibition on several categories of plastics will begin on Dec. 20th, affecting a range of products from checkout bags and cutlery to takeout containers and stir sticks. ?Sustainable Distribution: The extended waterways of Europe offer many advantages regarding logistical operations, particularly regarding reducing carbon emissions. The global distribution company is moving inventory and customer packages by sea as it provides a more efficient, lower emission, and faster mode of freight transport. By using sea transportation rather than traditional trucks, Amazon is avoiding roughly a quarter of the carbon emissions for next-day delivery trips on average in Sweden.
