Sustainability Bulletin - 12.05.2022

Dear Friends,

We have prepared a condensed bulletin for you based on news, articles, and developments that recently took place around the globe about Sustainability.

Here’s what happened last week in our Sustainable World;

?Sustainable Investing: Investors who opt for a sustainable approach are aligning themselves with some of the world's most powerful growth trends. But this can also inhibit diversification. Applying multi-asset perspectives can address these problems by balancing portfolio risks to improve risk-adjusted return potential. Sustainable investing approaches aim to deliver attractive returns through investments in issuers that contribute to positive social and environmental outcomes. Yet this massive opportunity can also create risks, because there is a smaller pool of sustainable investment targets to choose from. The backbone of these approaches is implementing a repeatable process for selecting issuers that are aligned with sustainability goals and also have solid business models with strong return potential. ?Aviation Technology: Sustainability is a key consideration within the aviation industry according to Pictet Asset Management’s webinar titled ‘The sun shines on a new dawn in aviation technology’ took place, which explored the various technologies supporting sustainability within the industry. Sustainable options include ultra-light materials and synthetic fuels while hydrogen fuel cells emit significantly lower greenhouse gases. In addition, other options for engines and battery-powered short haul flights are being considered. Read more: https://bit.ly/3HbBvfE

?Sustainability Assessments: The United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) releases Authentic Sustainability Assessment: A User Manual for the Sustainable Development Performance Indicators, which provides — for the first time — a comprehensive set of indicators for assessing organizational performance in the context of sustainability thresholds and transformative change needed to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. To advance from existing SDG indicators, which assess incremental performance, the SDPIs instead assess performance relative to normative sustainability thresholds. Read more: https://bit.ly/3FtREfb

?Manufacturing Footprint: First Solar Inc. plans to establish a photovoltaic solar module manufacturing facility at Mallard Fox West Industrial Complex in Lawrence County, Alabama. The $1.8 billion project is expected to create 700 jobs. The new fully vertically integrated facility, which will join three factories in Ohio, is part of the company’s previously announced investment in scaling its American manufacturing footprint to over 10 gigawatts by 2025. ?Green Way: The Indian Railways — the world’s fourth-largest railway network — aims to become a net zero carbon emitter in the next seven years. ?Sustainable Textile: Decathlon is continuing down the circular path: after a rental and second-hand service, the retailer now also offers Belgian consumers the option of having their clothes, backpacks and bags repaired. The repair service aims to perform 4,000 repairs in the first year (roughly 80 per week). This is not a free service however, for each item, the service charges a certain price. The repairs are carried out by the Mechelen-based start-up CiLAB, a circular textile laboratory specialising in the repair and upcycling of clothing and accessories. ?Paper Capsule: Many major companies have been making strides over the past few years to make their products more environmentally friendly. Businesses like New Belgium Brewing Company have switched to sustainable vendors, and Numi Organic Tea committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2023 (via Grow Ensemble). Working to become a more sustainable, environmentally friendly company is not only expected, it is slowly but surely becoming a reality for many businesses. One of the companies making steps to go green is Nestlé's Nespresso. Read more: https://bit.ly/3VCf2fZ
