Sustainability Bulletin 09.19.2022

Dear Friends,

We have prepared a condensed bulletin for you based on news, articles, and developments that recently took place around the globe about Sustainability.

Here’s what happened last week in our Sustainable World;

??Renewable Resources: Africa could supply the whole world with affordable low-carbon energy in the form of hydrogen, a new report suggests. In its Africa Energy Outlook 2022, the International Energy Agency (IEA) says Africa’s rich renewable resources — particularly solar energy, but also onshore wind — are the key to unlocking this potential. Africa could produce 5,000 megatonnes of hydrogen a year at less than $2 per kilogram — equivalent to the "global total energy supply today," the IEA says. Read more: https://bit.ly/3LsBNPd

???Sustainable Headquarters: Boston Materials has opened a new sustainably built headquarters in Billerica, Massachusetts. The custom designed facility provides a manufacturing footprint that can support nine-digit revenues, enabling a bigger production scale. Known for its patented Z-axis Fiber technology, a lightweight material with “significant energy dissipation properties that is produced from reclaimed carbon fiber,” Boston Materials enables manufacturers of industrial and consumer products to create highly differentiated, energy-efficient products that have a low carbon footprint, the company says. ??Sustainability Goals: PepsiCo AMESA has avoided the use of approximately 5 billion liters of water in 2021 compared to 2020 by changing the way farmers irrigate crops, focusing on at-risk locations, and improving water-use efficiency. Dubai, United Arab Emirates: In observance of World Water Week, PepsiCo AMESA recognized its key water stewardship milestones in progressing towards the vision of becoming net positive by 2030. Guided by pep+, PepsiCo’s strategic end-to-end transformation for driving long-term sustainability, PepsiCo AMESA highlights its multi-pronged approach to watershed management through water-use efficiency on farms and in manufacturing facilities, water replenishment, watershed health improvement, and safe water access for communities. ??Sustainable Future: Holding company Alphabet is contributing US$5.7bn to help build a more sustainable world for our communities and our planet, through the use of technology. Alphabet, the parent of major companies like Google and Youtube, recently released its 2022 Sustainability Impact Report. In the report, the multinational technology holding company outlines its plans to contribute US$5.75bn to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives across its many platforms. ??Sustainability Plan: In recent years, businesses have faced increased pressure from their customers, employees, investors, the public sector, and many other stakeholder groups on issues impacting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. As such, it’s no surprise companies are making commitments and executing strategies to improve the sustainability of their operations. The Harvard Business Review last year reported that “virtually all of the world’s largest companies now issue a sustainability report and set goals,” and added that more than 2,000 companies have set decarbonization targets. ?Coffee Business: Swiss retailer Migros said that it is launching a coffeemaking system designed to replace capsules that produce thousands of tons of waste worldwide each year. The cooperative said its spherical capsules — described as “coffee balls” — are fully compostable, unlike the plastic and aluminum containers popularized by its rival Nestle under the brand Nespresso 36 years ago.
