Sustainability Bulletin - 01.23.2023

Dear Friends,

We have prepared a condensed bulletin for you based on news, articles, and developments that recently took place around the globe about Sustainability.

Here’s what happened last week in our Sustainable World;

??Solar Tech: Scientists have developed a way of transforming plastic waste and greenhouse gases into sustainable fuels using solar power. The system, developed by researchers at the University of Cambridge, could address plastic pollution and become a “game-changer” in the development of a circular economy. ??Defense Industry: Digital transformation is required to design, build, and maintain new products because, without it, efficiency in research, development, and production would never progress—and innovation would be stifled. In the aerospace and defense industry, for example, new fuels, aerodynamic designs, materials, and manufacturing devices all drive critical advances in innovation that pay massive dividends. ??Ozone Action: Earth’s protective ozone layer is slowly but noticeably healing at a pace that would fully mend the hole over Antarctica in about 43 years, a new United Nations report says. “Ozone action sets a precedent for climate action. Our success in phasing out ozone-eating chemicals shows us what can and must be done — as a matter of urgency — to transition away from fossil fuels, reduce greenhouse gases and so limit temperature increase,” World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General Prof. Petteri Taalas said in a statement. ??Electricity Policy: The United States is offering to help Mexico with loans to finance planned solar power stations in the northern state of Sonora that will significantly increase the clean energy supply, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said. Mexico, which has been at odds with the United States and Canada over electricity policy because of Lopez Obrador's drive to give control of the market to his cash-strapped state energy companies, wants to double renewable power capacity by 2030. ??Green Steel: Green steel is a key enabler for the green transition, as it will be a critical raw material for developing renewable energy infrastructure, such as wind turbines, as well as in segments such as construction, the automotive industry, and consumer goods. In Europe alone, the demand for decarbonized steel is expected to reach 50 million tons by 2030, nearly one-third of the current European steel demand. Read more: https://bit.ly/3H3L2U2

??Wooden Home: The University of Maine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center (ASCC) spearheaded building BioHome3D in Orono, Maine, the world’s first 3D-printed house made entirely with bio-based materials such as wood flour, or fine sawdust, mixed with a binder made from corn. Layer by layer, the wooden home was 3D printed using an industrial polymer printer at the ASCC where there was little to no construction waste thanks to the precision of the printing process. The 600-square-foot residential prototype features 3D-printed floors, walls, and roofs from wood fibers and bio-resins, and the house is fully recyclable and highly insulated with 100% wood insulation. ??Sustainable Vehicles: To accelerate the global move toward sustainable vehicles, Toyota is suggesting simply replacing the inner workings of vehicles already on the roads with cleaner technology like fuel cells and electric motors. Read more: https://bit.ly/3WtBgAr
