Sustainability bug bites-in to begin Industry 5.0 The Fifth Industrial Revolution

Industry 5.0 lead by Sustainability will have very positive impact on the environment and will save our Mother Earth by Manish Panchal – New Energy Enthusiast, Author and Board Member

Sustainability and the journey toward achieving net zero emissions have become pivotal priorities in recent years. Recognizing the urgent need to address climate change and its consequences, individuals, organizations, and governments worldwide have embarked on a transformative path toward a more sustainable future. This journey has witnessed remarkable progress and inspired collective action across various sectors. Sustainable practices, renewable energy sources, and innovative technologies have become central to the discourse, enabling a transition toward a greener and more resilient world.

One of the key achievements in the sustainability journey has been

the increased adoption of renewable energy. Solar and wind power, in

particular, have experienced significant growth, with countries investing in

large-scale projects and individuals installing solar panels on rooftops.

Furthermore, the development of energy storage solutions, such as advanced

batteries, has helped overcome the intermittent nature of renewable sources,

making them more reliable and accessible. This transition away from fossil

fuels has not only reduced greenhouse gas emissions but also fostered energy

independence and created new economic opportunities.

Another crucial aspect of the sustainability journey has been

the implementation of sustainable practices across sectors. Companies and

industries are actively pursuing strategies to reduce their environmental

impact by optimizing resource efficiency, adopting circular economy principles,

and minimizing waste. Moreover, there has been a notable shift toward

sustainable transportation, with the rise of electric vehicles and the

expansion of charging infrastructure. Additionally, individuals are making

conscious choices to embrace sustainable lifestyles, including reducing waste,

practicing eco-friendly habits, and supporting ethical and environmentally

responsible businesses.

The concept of achieving net zero emissions has gained

significant traction, with many countries, organizations, and cities committing

to this ambitious goal. Governments are enacting policies and regulations to

incentivize emission reductions and support the transition to clean energy.

Businesses are setting science-based targets, implementing carbon offset

programs, and integrating sustainability into their core strategies.

Technological advancements, such as carbon capture and storage, are also being

explored to mitigate emissions from hard-to-decarbonize sectors. Overall, the

net zero journey represents a global collaborative effort to combat climate

change and create a sustainable future for generations to come.

ESG considerations, the pursuit of net zero emissions, and the rise of green hydrogen are expected to disrupt several industries as they drive significant shifts in energy production, consumption patterns, and environmental impact. The fossil fuel industry, including coal, oil, and gas, is likely to face considerable disruption as the transition toward renewable energy sources accelerates. With increased investments in clean energy and net zero goals, demand for fossil fuels is projected to decline, leading to significant challenges for traditional energy companies. Additionally, industries reliant on high carbon emissions, such as heavy manufacturing and transportation, will need to adapt and transform their operations to meet sustainability targets. Green hydrogen, as a clean energy carrier, has the potential to disrupt traditional energy distribution networks, as it can be produced from renewable sources and used as a fuel in various sectors, including transportation, heating, and industrial processes. This shift toward green hydrogen may impact industries such as oil and gas, as well as conventional transportation and heating systems, creating opportunities for new players in the clean energy sector.

The future of sustainability, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices, net zero emissions, green hydrogen, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) holds immense promise and expected to play a central role in shaping the future of our mother earth.

Sustainability will continue to be a critical focus in the coming years. Businesses will increasingly integrate sustainability into their core operations, recognizing the value of long-term resilience and responsible practices. Investors and financial institutions are placing greater emphasis on ESG factors when making investment decisions, as they recognize the impact of environmental and social risks on long-term financial performance. Companies will need to integrate ESG metrics and reporting into their strategies to attract investment and maintain stakeholder trust. Enhanced transparency and accountability will become the norm, driving positive change and fostering sustainable business practices.

Investments in green hydrogen production, storage, and distribution infrastructure will increase, and research and development efforts will focus on improving its efficiency and cost-effectiveness. As green hydrogen becomes more accessible and affordable, it has the potential to revolutionize energy systems and contribute to a sustainable and low-carbon future.

With all of above thoughts, I believe Global Sustainability Initiatives will disrupt various Industrial initiatives. And this, I call it as the beginning of Industry 5.0

We all know Industrial revolution journey.

  • Starting 18th Century, Industry 1.0 was focused on Water and Steam powered mechanical manufacturing,
  • That continued till 20th Century almost 200 years, when we saw Electrically powered products with division of labour, this we called as Industry 2.0 that lasted for 70 years.
  • In early 1970s till late 2010 (almost 40 years) we say growth was supported through focus on Electronic and IT for improved automation and manufacturing, this we called as Industry 3.0
  • Industry 4.0 was all about cyber physical & Digital systems wherein we talked about integration IOT and stuff around that was supported by 4G telecom networks and continue to move in next orbit with 5G.?This has been for past 10 years and continues as Industry 4.1, 4.2…. with NLP, AI, Block Chain and so on…
  • Now, I have coined this new disruptive but globally constructive term Industry 5.0 as the next wave, and it is going to capitalize on a new setup based on sustainability and climate change agenda.

Implementing SDGs, ESG, Goal Net Zero, GH2GNH3 and various sustainability linked initiatives are already into foray.

As we see from these industrial revolutions, Change is not only Constant but accelerated too from 200 years to less than 10 years.

Industry 5.0 lead by Sustainability will have very positive impact on the environment and will save our Mother Earth.

Thank you!

Great insights, Manish Panchal. I agree that sustainability shapes industries and the transition to net zero emissions matters amid the ongoing environmental issues. We are witnessing the rise of green hydrogen while sectors prioritizing sustainability compliance attract new investments and stakeholder trust. This trend will revolutionize energy systems. Achieving 'Net Zero' is crucial for global climate action. It is encouraging to see over 190 nations committed to this goal. How to make it a mass movement will be key factor which will be determined by strong political will and people participation. In the short run there will be trade offs but in the long run it will pay off?
