Yesterday, top executives at BMW and Volkswagen warned against imposing EU import duties on electric vehicles from Chinese automakers, stating that it could harm European automakers that import cars made in China, whilst also damaging the EU's Green Deal plan. The EU is currently investigating whether fully-electric cars from China should receive higher tariffs (Reuters).

Last week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued new federal safety standards, meaning by 2029 all new cars in the US will be required to be fitted with automatic emergency brake technology, which should be able to bring them to a stop without crashing or hitting pedestrians (The Washington Post).

New research has suggested that the use of flame retardants in auto interior seats could pollute the air in car cabins with highly toxic chemicals, as reported by The Guardian. In the peer-reviewed study, about 99% of car-interior air samples contained at least one flame retardant which the government considers a carcinogen or potential carcinogen (The Guardian).
