Susannah Dawn: Brimming with Out-of-the-Box Creativity

Trying to shove a square peg into a round hole is an exercise in futility. And

yet, countless people go through life trying to fit themselves into an ill-fitting

mold. Maybe they felt pressured into a certain career even though the field

bored them to tears. Today, they often feel mentally and emotionally trapped

on a mind-numbing treadmill.

Reinvention Maven Susannah Dawn has been there. In 2022, this Portland,

Oregon-based force of nature broke out of her suffocating box. Today, she

thrives as a vibrant storyteller and innovator who helps women and veterans

to “Move Beyond Boxes and Shine.”

Escaping a Lifetime of Boxes

A former U.S. Army Officer, Susannah Dawn was well acquainted with

structure and regimentation. After her military service ended, she still felt

constrained in multiple ways. “All my life, I was placed in the proverbial box

by family, employers, and society.

“Tired of being told who and what I was, and what I was supposed to be, I

entered 2022 with a total reinvention to move beyond those boxes. It was

the moment I stopped trying to fit in…instead, dropping the mask I’d hid

behind for decades and moving forward in life as my authentic self.

“This ignited my focus to help other women become aware we no longer

need to stay in a box…My speaking and workshops also include other

veterans…so they can also step beyond what the limitations of others – and

our fears – try to place on them.”

A Wildly Creative Visionary

Today, Susannah Dawn happily embraces her “Move Beyond Boxes and

Shine” mission. This educator brings her message to higher education

institutions and forward-thinking businesses. A Portland State University

alumnus, her Master’s in International Management and Bachelor of Science

in History enrich her work.

A keynote speaker, Susannah Dawn invites her audience into each

interactive event. “When speaking on stage ─ including podcasts, TV, and

LinkedIn Live events, I transport the audience into the discussion…to feel

what it’s like to both be boxed…and the joy and confidence gained upon

moving beyond boxes.”

Susannah Dawn is also a highly prolific author. Her “Armor of God” fantasy

series highlights a protagonist’s efforts to escape his ill-fitting boxes. In

2024, Susannah Dawn took an authorship role in three internationally

acclaimed anthologies.

“Move Beyond Boxes and Shine” Expands

As her “Move Beyond Boxes and Shine” mission takes flight, Susannah Dawn

revels in a joyful collaboration. “What has been the most fulfilling is working

with my best friend, the soul-hearted Dr. Constance Leyland, on anthologies

and ways to continue growing the ‘Move Beyond Boxes and Shine’

movement…We also have multiple other projects in the works.”

Within five years, Susannah Dawn plans to take her inspiring message to the

international stage. A “Move Beyond Boxes and Shine” TED Talk, and

additional sci-fi and fantasy novels, are key goals. Finally, Susannah Dawn

envisions a full-circle mission: “Manifesting to secure funds to start a non-

profit organization with my dear sister, with initial projects revolving around

mental health and wellness,” she concluded.
