Surviving to Thriving – Why Being A Support Coordinator Makes Me Smile Every Day

The world is a complicated place at the best of times. If you have a disability, the complexity tends to increase, and there may be many more things to think about and manage for even relatively small tasks. In Australia, the first part of navigating these challenges is to secure a support plan and funding to meet it from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). But even with funding in place, getting the right support in place in the right way can be tricky.
That is where people like me come in. I am proud to be an NDIS support coordinator for a brilliant company called OnSide NDIS . Put simply, we help you turn your NDIS plan and funding into the changes that you want to see in your life and the ongoing support that you need. Our approach is to focus on you as an individual, your ?unique strengths, goals, challenges and opportunities. We work with you to get where you want to go, rather than taking charge and leading you where we think you should be going, regardless of your views!
One of the things that I love most about my job is seeing the real difference it makes to people’s lives. In some ways, my role is a bit like a personal shopper, but for much more important things than the right outfit. I help my clients put together a package of support designed especially for them based not only on their needs but also on their goals. I help people go from struggling just to live to thriving and reaching their objectives.
The most important part of my job is really getting to know my customers. With such a wide range of supports and services available, many people do not even know where they could be getting help. I carefully get to know every aspect of my participants lives to ensure that needs in every area from basic care to building relationships with family and friends to pursuing hobbies and interests. ?Then I match these needs up with the many different support and service providers that I know of, and help my clients put together a package that gets the most from their plan and that all works well together.

I never make the decisions for my customers. They are always in charge, and my role is to make sure that they are fully aware of their options, and sometimes to open their eyes to possibilities that they did not even know existed.
The best part about my job is the people that I am able to help. Seeing them flourish with the right support is incredibly rewarding, and I long to see more people with disabilities thrive through having the right services in place. We all deserve to get the most out of our lives, and I love being a part of making that happen for others every day.
