Surviving Nursing Finals: A Guide for Nursing Students

Nursing finals can feel overwhelming, because THEY ARE! It seems like you were just starting the semester and getting the hang of your schedule and now the Thanksgiving has been traded in for December festivities, the dorms have a move-out checklist ready, flights home are skyrocketing: the semester is just about over. Know this: understanding your study habits is key to overcoming the challenges they present.

Many students face a common pitfall known as the "pump and dump" method of studying. This involves cramming as much information as possible into a short period, only to forget it shortly after the exam. While it may seem like a viable strategy for managing multiple classes, this approach is ineffective and inefficient. Instead, nursing students should aim for consistent review throughout the semester, ensuring that information is retained over time rather than sacrificed for fleeting performance on an exam.

If you've struggled throughout the semester, be prepared to face some challenges during finals week. Many universities provide a "reading day" before finals start, but it's important to realize that this one day will not be enough to turn an entire semester around. Instead of trying to cram a semester's worth of content into those few hours, use reading day wisely to strategize your approach for tackling finals. Create a study schedule, prioritize topics, and focus on key concepts that need reinforcement.

During finals time, it's easy to get caught up in the stress of comparing yourself to others. Remember, you only know your situation—you have no idea what struggles your friends or classmates might be going through. Even those you’re closest to may not share their difficulties. The best approach is to mind your business and avoid prying into others' challenges unless your intention is genuinely supportive and helpful. Taking care of your mental health and focusing on your own journey is paramount.

It's also important to keep in mind that your grades do not define you. Let's repeat that: your grades do not define you. It's entirely possible to face adversity in the form of a less-than-stellar exam score and still come out on top in your academic and professional journey. You possess the strength to push through any situation and emerge stronger. Remember, finals are just one chapter in your nursing education, not the finale of your potential.

Completing a nursing program isn’t easy. It is that struggle that makes the accomplishment so special. Each challenge faced along the way is a stepping stone towards that degree, and overcoming obstacles instills a sense of pride and determination. The unique satisfaction of finishing what you started is something that only those who have persevered can fully appreciate.

Lastly, remind yourself that you are stronger than your circumstances. Finals may be tough, but they are simply a necessary part of the process. Arm yourself with the knowledge that resilience and perseverance will help you conquer any hurdles ahead.

Navigating finals week may not be easy, but with the right mindset and strategies in place, you can come out on the other side ready to take on the world of nursing. Keep pushing forward; you're capable of achieving great things. I will see you on the other side!
