Feeling overloaded and underappreciated with extra workloads after recent layoffs?
In today’s work climate, many professionals are facing this challenge, especially in the wake of layoffs, staff reductions and restructuring.
While it's understandable to feel survivor’s remorse and grateful for still having a job and a paycheck, these additional responsibilities can add significant stress and impact your well-being.
Follow these steps to manage your workload without sacrificing your peace of mind.
1.?Evaluate the Impact
How does it align with your current workload and career goals? If it doesn’t contribute to your desired career path, it's important to acknowledge this.
2.?Communicate Openly
Have an honest conversation with your leader. Ask about the short term and long-term plan for the workload. Where are they in the hiring process? How can you support them with hiring and onboarding the new staff?
3.?If Possible, Seek Alternatives
You may be the only person that can do the work. If not, suggest alternative solutions or delegate tasks that may be better suited for others on your team.
For instance, you could say, "I appreciate the opportunity, but I believe my skills are better utilized in my current projects or my current bandwidth is stretched. Can we discuss the top priorities or how I can best contribute to the team?"
4.?Focus on What You Can Control
While you may not be able to change the situation, you can control how you respond to it. Shift your mindset from feeling overwhelmed to focusing on what’s within your power to manage. Break down tasks into manageable steps and tackle them one at a time.
5.??Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Help
You’re not alone in this. Reach out to your manager or colleagues if you need support or clarification on priorities. Remember, asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.
6.??Protect Your Well-Being
Establish clear boundaries around work and personal time. It’s easy to burn out when you’re constantly taking on more. Set aside moments to recharge, even if it’s just a quick walk or a few minutes of mindfulness during the day.
7.??Evaluate Your Career Alignment
If the additional tasks don't align with your long-term career goals or personal growth, it may be a signal to reassess your path. While being a team player is important, don’t lose sight of where you want to go. If you’re consistently being pulled in a direction that doesn't contribute to your aspirations, it may be time to start creating an exit strategy.
Consider exploring new opportunities that better align with your vision, whether that means pursuing a new role within the company or planning for a future transition. Your career should be as fulfilling as it is productive – don’t be afraid to seek out what truly excites you!
By taking proactive steps, you can regain control, stay aligned with your goals, and create a fulfilling career, even in challenging times.
