A stroke is a serious life-threatening medical condition that happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. Strokes are a medical emergency and urgent treatment is essential. The sooner a person receives treatment for a stroke, the less damage is likely to happen. People who survive a stroke are often left with long-term problems caused by injury to their brain. Some people need a long period of rehabilitation before they can recover their former independence, while many never fully recover and need ongoing support after their stroke
.According to the World Health Organization, a Stroke is defined as an accident to the brain with "rapidly developing clinical signs of focal or global disturbance to cerebral function, with symptoms lasting 24 hours or longer, or leading to death, with no apparent cause other than of vascular origin and includes cerebral infarction, intracerebral hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage"
.Acute stroke is also commonly called a cerebrovascular accident which is not a term preferred by most stroke neurologists. Stroke is NOT an accident. The better and more meaningful term is "brain attack", similar in significance to "heart attack". A lacunar stroke occurs when an artery to the deep part of the brain, containing structures like the thalamus or basal ganglia, is blocked. These arteries are very small and branch off directly from a larger artery, making them particularly vulnerable to blockage These deeper structures receive their blood flow through a unique set of arteries.
A lacunar stroke is a type of ischemic stroke. It results from a blockage in one of the small arteries deep in the brain. Around 25% of strokes are of this type. Diabetes, smoking, and cardiovascular disease are among the risk factors
Overall, the case fatality rates at 30 days (mean, 2.5%) and at 1 year (mean, 2.8%) were similar to those in the general population; however, the mortality rate after lacunar infarctions increased to 27.4% at 5 years, 60% after 10 years, and 75% after 14 years.
