SURVIVING THE INTERVIEW JUNGLE: When Recruiters Go To WAR!!!

The job interview—a rite of passage that can feel more like stepping into a war zone than a friendly chat. If you’ve ever walked into an interview and felt like you were about to face a battle, you’re not alone!

Let’s explore some trials of interviews and how to triumph over them.

The Arena—Where Recruiters Hold Court

Imagine this: You enter the interview room, and it suddenly feels like you’re part of a reality show called Survivor: Office Challenge. The recruiter, armed with a notepad of tricky questions, sits poised like a judge ready to pass sentence.

Common Interview Traps (Watch Your Step!)

  1. The Classic “Tell Me About Yourself” Ambush: Just when you’re settling in, they hit you with this curveball. What do they really want to know: your life story or your mother's maiden name?
  2. The “Where Do You See Yourself in Five Years?” Question: If you respond with “still here,” will they see you as complacent? But claiming you’ll be running the company might seem overly ambitious.
  3. Cultural Fit or Cultural Shock? : When asked about handling conflict, you might wonder if they picture you as a fierce warrior or a calm negotiator.

The Pressure Cooker

From the moment you enter, the pressure feels higher than your uncle's family expectations during gatherings. You sweat bullets as they present questions faster than traffic in Lagos!

The Waiting Game

And then comes the worst part: waiting for feedback. You refresh your email more times than you check your bank balance after a wedding. Will they reply, or are you stuck in the “we’ll get back to you” void?

Tips for Winning the War

To equip you for this battlefield, here are some tips:

  • Prepare like a ninja: Practice your answers, but don’t sound robotic. Show them your personality!
  • Research the Company: Dive deep! Know their mission like you know where the best jollof rice is served. It'll impress them and might even get you a free meal!
  • Stay calm under fire: Remember to breathe! Imagine the recruiter in a ridiculous outfit—maybe your cousin’s oversized agbada.
  • Prepare Your Responses: Use the STAR technic: It’s like a dramatic movie script—Convince them you’re the hero they’ve been waiting for! Stay tuned, I will be talking about the STAR technic extensively but not today.
  • Practice Common Questions: Rehearse until you can answer “Tell me about yourself” in your sleep.
  • Dress the Part: Choose your outfit wisely, like you’re dressing for a wedding. If you show up in pajamas, they might think it’s a sleep-in interview!
  • Mind Your Body Language: Channel your inner monarch: Walk in like you own the place, but keep your royal wave to a minimum!
  • Prepare Questions to Ask: Have minimum of 3 questions ready that show you care about the role.
  • Follow up respectfully: Shoot a polite message after the interview. Think of it as sending a peace offering after a war.

Have you ever felt like you were in a fierce battle during an interview?

This is so true Most of the time they'll be so rude on purpose just to see your reaction and read your character. Be demure, don't fall for it. Thanks for this diary.
