The H/R department's role in a screening interview is primarily to assess basic qualifications and cultural fit. They verify if your skills and experience align with the job description's minimum requirements.
The H/R person conducting the screening interview also evaluates communication skills, professionalism, and overall demeanor to determine if the candidate is a good fit for the company culture. This initial screening helps narrow down the applicant pool before candidates move on to interviews with hiring managers.
Many candidates stumble during this initial stage. Common mistakes during a screening interview include not adequately researching the employer, failing to clearly articulate their skills and experience in relation to the job requirements, or displaying unprofessional behavior.
In my experience, job seekers often undersell themselves at this early stage by failing to highlight key accomplishments or demonstrate enthusiasm for the opportunity because they lack confidence in their abilities and underestimate the value they bring --- and /or because they don't fully understand the job requirements and therefore struggle to connect their skills to the role.
This crucial first impression can make or break a candidate's chances of getting to the next step in the interview process, so thorough preparation is key. It isn't just about having a polished resume; it's about presenting a complete and compelling package to the potential employer.
