Surviving EOFY: A Wellbeing Speaker's Guide to Thriving Through the Year-End Crunch

As the end of the financial year approaches, many of us can fins ourselves under immense pressure to meet deadlines, close out projects, settle on loas and prepare for audits. The heightened stress during this period can take a toll on mental and physical wellbeing. As a wellbeing speaker who runs workshops on mental health and wellbeing, I want to share some valuable strategies to help you not just survive, but thrive through this challenging time.

1. Prioritise Sleep for Optimal Performance

A good night's sleep is the foundation of mental and physical health. Unfortunately, during the EOFY crunch, sleep often takes a backseat. Here’s how you can ensure you get quality rest:

  • Set a Consistent Sleep Schedule: Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This helps regulate your body’s internal clock and improves the quality of your sleep.
  • Create a Relaxing Bedtime Routine: Engage in calming activities before bed, such as reading, meditating, or taking a warm bath. Avoid screens at least an hour before sleep to reduce exposure to blue light, which can interfere with your sleep cycle. Try to also avoid screens for the first 30min when you wake up, this can help you set the tone for the day in a positive way.

2. Disconnect to Reconnect with Yourself

Constant connectivity can lead to burnout. It’s essential to disconnect from work to recharge your mental batteries. Here are some practical steps:

  • Set Boundaries with Technology: Designate specific times during the day to check emails and messages. Outside of these times, turn off notifications to avoid constant interruptions.
  • Take Regular Breaks: Step away from your desk every hour. Use this time to stretch, take a short walk, or practise deep breathing exercises. These breaks can help clear your mind and reduce stress levels.

3. Prioritise and Reach Out to Team Mates for Help

The EOFY period can be characterised by a surge in workload. To manage this effectively:

  • Create a Task List: Write down all the tasks that need to be completed and prioritise them based on urgency and importance. This helps you focus on what truly matters and can help prevent overwhelm.
  • Reach Out to Team Mates for Help: Don’t hesitate to seek assistance from colleagues or team members. Collaborating and solving problems together can lighten your load and enable you to focus on high-priority activities.

4. Maintain a Healthy Diet and Stay Hydrated

Nourishing your body with the right foods and staying hydrated can significantly impact your energy levels and overall wellbeing.

  • Eat Balanced Meals: Incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into your diet. Avoid excessive caffeine and sugar, which can lead to energy crashes.
  • Stay Hydrated: Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Dehydration can lead to fatigue and difficulty concentrating.

5. Practise Mindfulness and Stress-Relief Techniques

Incorporating mindfulness and stress-relief practices into your daily routine can help you stay calm and focused.

  • Meditate Daily: Even a few minutes of meditation each day can reduce stress and improve your emotional wellbeing. Use apps or guided videos if you're new to meditation.
  • Engage in Physical Activity: Regular exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood boosters. Whether it's a brisk walk, yoga, or a gym workout, find an activity you enjoy and make it a part of your routine.

The EOFY period can be demanding, but by prioritising your wellbeing, you can navigate this challenging time with resilience and come out the other side still feeling well. Remember, taking care of yourself is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. Implement these strategies to ensure you stay healthy, focused, and productive as you close out the financial year.

Here’s to a balanced and successful EOFY!
