SURVIVING COVID-19 & HOW

As per medical experts, 80-85 of people will become fine after being affected by Covid-19 with mild to moderate symptoms. A Home isolation plan coupled with basic medications including paracetamol, Vitamin-C/D/Zinc, Azy-500, LCZ, gargle, steam, nebuliser with good healthy food can get one back on one’s feet in 14 to 17 days time.

Those cases falling in 15% category which are throwing up horror stories of human tragedies & loss. Patients swiftly moving from moderate to severe infections, oxygen fluctuations, medicine shortage, hospitalization or lack of it, sudden collapse and deaths. I have witnessed in past 10-15 days, mostly healthy, young population (30 to 45), with no co-morbidity issue, suddenly collapsing and dying.

I am not an expert but this is what I have gathered from my Covid-19 story and sharing with all of you.

5th day, in my experience, is most crucial when either you begin to recover or your situation drops requiring serious attention and treatment. However, if you have ignored or not felt the symptoms earlier or till day 5th, your preparation and response time goes further down putting your life to serious risk. So stay alert! Watch! Do not ignore any symptom- within yourself or those around you.

Till day-5th- I had no other symptoms except fever. My body would experience temperature in the range of 99 to 100 and that fever would subside with paracetamol. My antigen was negative. My RTPCR was negative. I thought fever was my body’s coping mechanism with all the loss of life of close friends, colleagues, relatives that I was experiencing. I believed my body is reacting to the overall sense of helplessness and inability to do much for those around me. It was a terrible phase and I felt I will be fine in a day or two. Yet, in all my wisdom and activism of my husband, I was isolated in my room and that helped protect my husband and children in the hindsight.

Suddenly, by the end of day-5th - I lost my sense of taste & smell. I was suddenly taken over by violent dry caugh making my breath short and difficult. I pressed the panic button. My friend who had experienced serious lung infection earlier immediately activated everyone around me to get HR CT Scan. My sister & brother-in-law converted their personal car into ambulance to take me for the HR CT Scan. By the end of 6th day, the doctor had the report and the clear picture of what was going on. My lungs were badly impacted. I was put on steroids.

It was just the beginning of many more challenges as now my oxygen level was fluctuating between 89 to 92. My breathlessness was throwing everyone into tizzy. It was important to decide if I could really stay at home or needed to be shifted to the hospital. A dozen heads and a million efforts were put together to somehow organize bed. While the bed issue was being sorted out, something had to be done for oxygen. #Ranjeeta & #Stuti travelled length & breadth of the NCR in the middle of the night with complete strangers/Samaritans and managed to get the oxygen cylinder by 3 am in the night (#WomenPower). It took another 24 hours for the system to be smoothly running at home with oxygen flow etc. Steroids, proning, nebuliser all sort of things contributed and in next 3 days my fever began to subside. My saturation level improved. My Doctor Isha, and a dear friend of my colleague, stood all along with her advise & guidance.

I have not required hospitalization but my folks are watching me closely. This phase has been most harrowing, heart warming, overwhelming. And I am glad- I am breathing.

Thank you all for your support, love, prayers and blessings. I have not been able to respond to each of the messages that I have received over past few days. I am saving all my energies to fight and get better. But you all are in my thoughts and in my prayers.

I want to stop with only one message.

PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT- ORGANISE ALL YOUR PAPERS / DOCUMENTS AT ONE PLACE; DRAFT A WILL; UPDATE NOMINEES IN YOIR FINANCIAL INVESTEMENTS/RECORDS; PUT ALL THE PASSWORDS/ACCESS CODE AT ONE PLACE SO THAT THE SAME CAN BE ACCESSED IN TIME OF EMERGENCY. BE READY FOR THE WORSE AND PRAY IT NEVER COMES!
