Survey Unveils Security Worries in Global IoT Trust Landscape
A recent research study conducted by IT security solutions provider Utimaco has exposed the prevailing lack of trust in Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
The report, titled "Circles of Trust 2023: Investigating Consumer Confidence in the Digital Society," released today, reveals that merely 14% of consumers consider smart devices to be secure, despite 38% utilizing them.
As our societies progressively interconnect in the digital realm, the allure of a connected world remains strong, with 41% of those surveyed expressing optimism about the potential convenience such interconnectedness could offer in their daily routines.
However, this study, which broadened its reach to include respondents from the United States, Mexico, and Singapore, in addition to last year's participants from Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom, unveils significant variations in attitudes towards IoT and smart city technology across different countries.
Remarkably, a mere 24% of the participants felt confident in defining the term "Internet of Things," suggesting that despite its industry usage, the concept remains relatively unfamiliar to consumers. Singapore led with the highest percentage (33%) of respondents who could accurately define the term, while the United Kingdom lagged behind with the lowest percentage (20%).
The report further emphasizes the need for enhanced communication strategies aimed at the general public. It underscores the importance of fortifying IoT and smart city digital infrastructure with the latest advancements in digital security solutions.
In a world that is progressively becoming more digital, characterized by a growing number of interconnected and intelligent devices demanding security, Utimaco CEO Stefan Auerbach remarked, 'The findings from our Circles of Trust white paper underline the necessity for additional efforts to establish trust and provide assurance for consumers and their interconnected devices.
