We recently completed a survey across LinkedIn focusing on “Is Your Job Search Struggling? Where Do You Feel You Need The Most Help?
1.??? From 2500+ survey respondents, 50% said they can’t find enough new jobs to apply to.
1)??? Twenty-Six Percent (26%) said Recruiters Can’t Find Them.
2)??? Only 18% said they need help with their resume and cover letter .
3)??? And 6% said they need help with their LinkedIn profile.
?A significant finding from the survey was that 50% of respondents reported difficulty in finding enough new job opportunities to apply to. This highlights a major hurdle in the job search process, as many individuals are struggling to identify enough suitable positions that match their skills and career aspirations.
Solution – Because a job seeker can never know ahead of time where a job opening will come from, they must use all the different resources available.? These include:
1)??? Having your online profiles effectively optimized so you can not just find new job openings but have these openings find you.
2)??? Setting up new job opening alerts based upon title, industry, years of experience, salary, geography, and openings within the last few days (if not, the last few hours).
3)??? Researching companies directly and visiting the career pages of those companies.
4)??? Reaching out to recruiters.
5)??? Understanding and leveraging the power of your network.
Another notable result from the survey was that 26% of respondents indicated that recruiters are unable to find them. This suggests that there may be a disconnect between job seekers and recruiters, possibly due to issues with visibility or the effectiveness of job search optimization strategies.
Solutions – Many LinkedIn profiles are invisible to recruiters due to profiles not being effectively optimized – Headline, summary, title, skills, positions, dates, education, certifications, etc.
Interestingly, only 18% of respondents felt that they needed help with their resume and cover letter. While these documents are crucial components of a job application, it appears that a majority of job seekers are confident in their ability to create effective resumes and cover letters. However, this result is very misleading.
A job seekers resume is the single most important tool in the job search process.? If a job seeker gets it right, it flows through to the rest of the job search process.? If it is not correct, a job seeker will be part of the 90% that gets disregarded in 15 seconds.? After personally reviewing of 500,000 resumes, over 90% are not written well (yes – 90%) Most job seekers strongly feel their resumes are great, but the reality is… They Are Not.? So, job seekers are sabotaging their own searches, right from the start.
Lastly, a mere 6% of respondents expressed a need for help with their LinkedIn profile. Given the importance of LinkedIn in modern job searches, this low percentage is somewhat surprising. And misleading.? Just like resumes where job seekers believe their resumes are in good shape, most LinkedIn profiles are not effectively optimized.? Which means, they cannot be found when companies, recruiters and hiring managers are looking for you and many times, they are actually invisible just because they did not include certain information or check the right boxes.
In conclusion, the survey results reveal significant challenges faced by job seekers in today's market. With 50% of respondents struggling to find enough new job opportunities, it is clear that job seekers must utilize all available resources to maximize their chances of success. This includes optimizing online profiles, setting up job alerts, researching companies, reaching out to recruiters and leveraging existing networks.
Additionally, the fact that 26% of respondents feel that recruiters cannot find them highlights the importance of visibility as a component of effective job search strategies. Despite only 18% of respondents seeking help with their resumes and cover letters, it is crucial to recognize the importance of these documents in the job search process. Finally, the low percentage of respondents seeking help with their LinkedIn profiles suggests a potential underestimation of the platform's value in connecting with recruiters and hiring managers.
