Despite the high demand for talents and the difficulty in attracting quality talents, it is even more heartbreaking to many hiring managers when the talents they have managed to attract drop off or lose interest during the hiring process.
A survey conducted by Oscar Temple and taken by our LinkedIn followers, taking a deep dive into their minds to understand their behavior regarding their hiring process.
Your interview stage is too long
From our survey, 55% agreed that a high number of interview stages affects the rate at which candidates drop off during a hiring process The longer your interview process takes including longer response/feedback time, the more likely candidates are to drop out of your hiring process because candidates who are actively seeking for new jobs do not only apply to your company, they probably have other actively interacting employers hence, they might tend to forget details about their experience with your company as time goes on. So if you leave them waiting too long without contacting them, they may not remember why they were interested in working at your company in the first place.
Candidates also have other opportunities to pursue, and they're not going to wait around forever for your organization to make up its mind about them. If you haven't made a hiring decision within two weeks of their first interview, it's likely that they'll assume that you've moved on without them (even if this isn't true).?
Too many assessments
While assessments are important in order to reach some hiring decisions, you wouldn’t want to overwhelm your candidates with assessments. To achieve this, it is advised that you stick to only the assessments most relevant to the particular role.?
Candidates are always expecting some kind of test but an excessive number of tests might not cut it. From the survey, we see that 20% agreed that this is the reason why candidates drop out during the hiring process.

Unclear Job Description
17% agreed that an unclear job description is another reason candidates drop out of your hiring process. Many recruiters, in their quest to get a multi-purpose talent, get to miss out on candidates who at the time of the job posting didn’t see these additional requirements being asked by the recruiter. Also, the job description may have been accurate and complete at the time of posting, but things can change quickly in today's fast-paced business environment.
For example, The recruiter has added responsibilities beyond those originally outlined in your ad, or perhaps your client's mission has shifted away from their previous goals and needs. In these cases, it might be necessary to update or revise your current listing accordingly so that interested candidates are aware of any relevant changes before they apply for an interview.
A better offer
From the survey, 9% of candidates drop off a hiring process because they got a better offer which could be a result of longer response time as well as lengthy interview stages and poor compensation. In order not to find yourself or your company losing valuable talents to other quick recruiters, you need to ensure that you do proper industry research based on remunerations for the advertised role and make sure your hiring process is optimized.
Conclusion
By making sure you optimize your recruiting process, you’ll not only hang on to high-value candidates more effectively, but you’ll also boost the overall impression job seekers have of your employment brand and candidate experience.
One key takeaway here is that you should not only review the candidate's experience and ensure the job description is accurate, but also take a look at your hiring processes to make sure that you’re not losing good candidates.
