Weak leaders are afraid to surround themselves with strong performers. They see strong performers as a threat to their own position. They call such performers "overqualified".

They try not to hire them, not to promote them, not to give them responsible assignments, not to invite them to important meetings.

Such weak leaders cheat on their own company, and their own future.

Strong leaders always try to pick the best people.

As my ex-boss David J. Moore liked to joke:

"Hire people smarter than yourself. In my own case, it was always easy to hire people smarter than me."

No wonder David had such a great career, and so many successes.

That's the right leadership attitude - hire smart people, empower them, give them clarity, provide them with the right tools and environment, and then - get out of their way.
