Surrendering To Life & Taking Opportunities

As an avid reader, I read such a volume of books that sometimes it is very hard for an individual book to really stand out from the crowd.

Yes, each book contains pearls of knowledge or wisdom but it is very rare that it isn't the content that strikes me but the premise of the book. One such book is one that I have just finished at the end of last week and it's taken me a few days to digest the message and ask questions of my own life.

The surrender experiment by Michael A. Singer is an amazing book and one that I would recommend everyone to read. The crazy turn of events that lead me to download this audiobook is that I was actually looking for a different book and clicked on this by mistake. But we need to surrender sometimes as the title suggests.

Michael tells his extraordinary?story of what happened when after a deep spiritual awakening in his twenties, he decided?to no longer let his personal fears and desires dictate his life but to simply surrender to?what life had in store. This radical decision to follow life’s flow led Singer to both the?pinnacle of success and the brink of disaster.

I won't give away any spoilers as Micheal takes us through his remarkable journey but there are some key takeaways I wanted to share with you.

First, let's take a look at what is (potentially) within our control:

  • How I respond to my emotions & feelings
  • How I respond to my thoughts
  • How I respond to my sensations
  • How I respond to my memories
  • How much action I take towards my goals
  • How much I focus on & engage in what I do
  • What I say and do to influence other people
  • How much I use my values for motivation
  • Whether or not I act as the sort of person I want to be
  • What I say and do to influence the future
  • How I respond to thoughts about the past
  • Being?self-compassionate?when losses occur
  • The values I live by
  • How I take care of and look after myself

Everything else in life is outside of our control. It is the difference between internal and external.

Surrendering to the external is very powerful.

We can't control what is going to happen in life. We can set our direction and just go with the flow. Micheal didn't even do this. He allows life to dictate his direction. I am not sure if I or any of you are brave enough to do this. It requires a deep faith in life to deliver what you need rather than what you want.

The one biggest takeaway from this book was to allow life to happen. It isn't going to suddenly just stop no matter how hard you will it to sometimes. Life has a way of presenting opportunities and as Micheal shows us if you remove your own preferences it can create amazing things.

Surrender to life, take action on those opportunities and never say no if life has presented it to you!!
