Surprising Facts Related to E-Waste and Global Warming

Sustainability and global warming are two sides of the same coin and we all must be concerned about both. There is a lot more to global warming than just increased temperatures and warm climate. The unusual changes in the environment due to extreme weather conditions and melting glaciers are all part or result of global warming. There are many reasons behind global warming. The latest to contribute hugely to the same is the improper or informal disposal of?e-waste. There are some surprising facts related to?e-waste?and global warming that each one of us must pay attention to.

The pace of replacing electronic devices by people is faster than recycling speed of Apple’s Liam Robot

People are so dependent on technology and electronic devices that they find it difficult to live without replacing their old devices with the updated one. This has increased the speed of?e-waste?generation. The United Nations Organization has predicted that in 2021 each person inhabiting the planet is expected to generate about 7.6 kg of?e-waste. This implies that 57.4 million tonnes will be produced worldwide. Liam Robot was created by Apple in 2016, which is capable of crushing 360 iPhones in a day. However, people are buying new Apple devices much faster than that. There are so many more electronic devices in the world other than iPhones. One can imagine the impact the?e-waste?generation is having on the environment considering it contains hazardous substances.

There are still some regions in the world that do not have proper e-waste recycling laws including 25 states from the U.S.

?With so much effort being put in to create awareness regarding recycling e-waste, there still are some regions in the world where there is no proper e-waste recycling?law let alone practising e-waste recycling?to reduce pollution and global warming. Surprisingly 25 states from the United States of America figure in the list of such regions/places. Isn’t it hard to digest?

Harmful gases produced in landfills fuel the Greenhouse Effect

Global warming is clearly the result of the greenhouse effect caused by some gases. Methane is one of the gases that fuel the greenhouse effect. One of the most common places where the gas is generated is the decomposition taking place in landfills, where all informal disposal of?e-waste?takes place. Burning plastics and informal extraction of metal from?e-waste,?by local?recyclers,?in the landfills also give rise to particles from these substances escaping into the atmosphere and adding to the greenhouse effect and further increasing global warming.

Having Recycling Centers is not enough to protect our environment

Out of the tons of?e-waste?generated every year only about 20% is successfully recycled. The remaining?e-waste?ends up in the landfills or is burnt. Heavy metals from the burnt e-waste somehow reach the soil, air, and water.

R2 certified?e-waste recycling companies?like?Namo E-Waste?abide by the rules laid down to protect the environment. Such?e-waste management?companies?repair and reuse electronics wherever possible. They recycle those materials from electronics that cannot be repaired like plastic, glass and metals. However, considering that only a small percentage of?e-waste?generated is recycled, merely having?recycling centres?will not solve the bigger purpose of protecting the environment or reducing global warming. All of us are required to work together to protect our environment.

Besides addressing the issue of global warming, enabling a sustainable ecosystem through recycling, minimizing pollution, and reusing electronic goods make our planet safe for us and future generations to inhabit!?
