The surprising connection between saving files and learning new information

Saving a file enhances memory of new material.

Volunteers were asked to study a list of words. One group was then told to save the file, and the other group was just told to close it.

Right after that, participants studied a second list and were tested on their memory of it. The people who saved the file remembered better the second list, this happened even when the first list was really short and easy to remember and there was no reason to save it.

We can learn from these experiments how digital storage and memory “outsource” free up resources for new learning.

So, don’t try to remember something that you can easily store because you will decrease chances of remembering new stuff.

Say you just parked your car in a big parking lot near a mall...

Take a photo of where you parked and don’t try to remember the place. If you take that photo, you have more resources for new information to come.
