Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!

Now this article will be exceptional for some.? Especially those born in the last 30 years or less who have children in public school.

I cannot accept changes in spelling and grammar to make it easier to communicate.? Poor grammar and misspelled words are unacceptable.? Please, I need not hear that, “It is only a blog.? Spelling and grammar don’t matter.”? I, like many, use an editor to help me with grammar and spelling.? My editor started working with me in 1971 as I was entering my sophomore year at Rochester Institute of Technology.? She continues to work with me to this day telling me that I have gotten a little bit better with spelling and grammar over the last 53 years. ?Yes, I am a slow learner.? ?After nearly 49 years of marriage I hope that more than my grammar? and spelling has improved.? Lynne is always there to encourage me to get better.? I am old fashioned when it comes to grammar and spelling.? I believe it should be taught and practiced as I was taught through elementary and high school.

Then there was the elimination of cursive writing taught in elementary school.? Some will tell you that my cursive is less than legible.? I learned to print as an engineer with structure as I wrote with block letters in a plastic stencil.? Now I can print legibly if I take the time to do so.? Yes, it is time consuming to write legibly in cursive or print.? I make the time when what I am writing needs to be read by someone other than me.? Of course most correspondence today can be completed where printed text and emails are accepted.? In today’s society partially spelled words are an accepted substitute as in “U” for “you.” I find that using “U” for “you” unacceptable or any other derivative of such unacceptable.

Now for the recent surprise.? We live in a planned community with a three year new STEM school.??STEM schools are?schools in which major subjects in the school are in the fields of?science,?technology,?engineering, and?mathematics.? Our school system allows for parents in the school’s immediate area to choose which school their child will learn and get the type of exposure needed for future growth and education development.? This grade school (K-8) is located less than a mile from a four lane road with heavy construction traffic early each morning, construction traffic that is predicted to last for many years into the future. ?Children are brought to school by the traditional yellow school bus.? Some, however, come by family transportation.? As you might imagine, the traffic at the beginning of the school day is horrific.? The school is now allowing children to be 15 minutes late for school without penalty.? The STEM school is teaching their students to be late for appointments.

I was brought up on the east coast.? I was taught to be 15 minutes early for all appointments.? If you were not 15 minutes early you were late.? When I moved to California, where the surf is always up, I was told, ?“If you adhere to this rule of being 15 minutes early someone will shoot you.”? The good news is no one shot me, and I continued the practice of being early for all appointments.

When I was told of the STEM school’s new practice I thought it was a joke.? How is it that schools teach and more importantly accept tardiness?? Will practices like this regurgitate into schools of higher learning or more importantly to the work place?? Imagine the banking systems allowing late mortgage payments.? Maybe that has already been learned with credit card debt at an all-time high in the United States.? Some businesses are allowing flex time where employees can choose the hours they want to work.? Our federal law makers are even discussing how to shorten the work week to four days, 32 hour work weeks for the same pay as the current 40 hour work week.? If successful, four day work weeks for 32 hours, that would decrease productivity by 20 percent in the United States.? How will we make up the difference?

I am all in when it comes to making our society a more enjoyable place to live.?? My concern is that we are becoming too relaxed in the standards that have made our country great.? When it comes to attracting the right prospects and generating more referrals it is up to each and every one of us to keep our standards high.? If not, someone else will come along and take the business to their door step.
