Surprise! - The Big Life Relocation: A Happy Rollercoaster ??

#ThorsDayInsights 20

As we prepare to relocate from Vietnam to Switzerland, the process has been a whirlwind of emotions and logistical challenges. Here's a glimpse into our journey:

Range of Emotions ??

Preparing to relocate brings a mix of excitement and anxiety. On the one hand, I'm looking forward to the fresh air, new experiences, and the efficiency of systems in Switzerland. These aspects fill me with optimism. However, the sheer number of tasks, such as setting up new bank accounts, understanding (again) the tax system, and organising our new apartment, is daunting. Additionally, moving to a country where I don't speak the language adds another layer of complexity. There's also the challenge of commuting to Vietnam (again) and being a visitor rather than a resident.

Challenging Goodbyes After Decades in Vietnam ??

Saying goodbye after living in Vietnam for 34 years, including a continuous 20-year stint, is incredibly difficult. Here are some elements of life in Vietnam that I'll miss the most:

  1. Favourite Eateries: Routine visits to places like Baba's Kitchen, our favourite Indian restaurant, have become a cherished part of our weekly schedule. The owner, Robin, has become a good friend, and we'll miss our Saturday chats and meals there.
  2. Friends and Familiar Faces: Over the years, we've built relationships with many people—shop owners, regular taxi drivers, and even the staff in our compound. These daily interactions have become a comforting routine.
  3. Office Dynamics: The office environment will also change. While my long-term colleagues know me well, newer employees might not feel the same connection. This shift could make me feel like a stranger over time.
  4. Business Networks: I regularly meet with various business groups and leaders. I will need to adapt my schedule to maintain these connections during my periodic visits.

Decluttering and Letting Go of Belongings ??

Decluttering and letting go of accumulated belongings over the years has been tough. We found papers dating back 20 years from old apartments, which were easy to discard, but personal items like my kids' school reports were harder. I took digital photos of many items before shredding them. Due to space constraints in Switzerland, we've had to let go of old pictures, take photos of them, and shred the originals.

We've also been making decisions about larger pieces of furniture. We are only bringing items that are important to us and those that will fit our new, more modern apartment. Items like bookshelves, desks, display cabinets, and even a gas barbecue are staying behind. I've given these items to people in the office, with some pieces being used at the office itself, like the barbecue for rooftop party events.

Logistical Challenges ??

Logistically, we're fortunate to be using a relocation company, 嘉柏安居 (big shout out to Jamie Rossall and his team!). They estimated that we needed only half a container for our move, significantly less than when we moved from Switzerland to Vietnam 20 years ago when we filled a whole container and left items behind.

Mental and Emotional Preparation ????

Moving to Switzerland is a significant goal for me, driven by the desire for a higher quality of life. I'm looking forward to activities like e-biking, daily walks in nature and langlauf in winter. The fresh, unpolluted air will be a welcome change from Vietnam's heavily polluted environment. I believe this healthier environment will also help with my long COVID recovery.

I'm mentally preparing by focusing on these positives and envisioning a balanced, joyful life in Switzerland. This move is not just about a new location; it's about enhancing our overall well-being. As our final destination, Switzerland aligns with our future plans, including retirement within the next decade (or two).

Family Reactions and Support ??????

My wife's family is excited about our move, as we'll live close to them in the same canton. Their encouragement has been invaluable, and we're looking forward to being near family and enjoying their company.

What We're Looking Forward To ??

We're most excited about the natural beauty and outdoor activities in Switzerland. Daily walks in clean air, e-biking, and cross-country skiing (langlaufen) are high on our list. We're also looking forward to our new, modern apartment with 10-gigabyte internet speeds—an incredible upgrade from our current setup. The efficiency and quality of life in Switzerland, healthy food and Swiss perfection, are all aspects we eagerly anticipate.

Staying Connected with Vietnam ??

Despite the move, we plan to stay connected with our friends and life in Vietnam. I'll return every other month for about two weeks, compressing activities like speaking engagements, networking, and meetings with senior management into these visits. My wife will join me a few times a year to maintain our connections and enjoy the vibrant life we've built here.

This journey is filled with mixed emotions and numerous challenges, but it's also an opportunity for growth and new experiences.?
