Surging egg prices
Hi Folks. The latest Farm to Fork: The Innovators Podcast episode went live earlier this week with an interview with Ben Jacobs from Tocabe Restaurant and Marketplace. The commodity markets continued to click last week with beef prices fairly steady at elevated levels, but some key markets were below prior year, the chicken markets mixed with breasts near two year highs, and the grain markets continuing to soften. And don't look now but table egg prices have reached their most expensive level since the Georgia Bulldogs won their last NCAA football championship in the winter of 2023 (totally fired up for college football this weekend).
As you and your mothers know, table egg supplies have been sacked at times during the last few years by avian flu challenges. And that is certainly a major driver of the recent egg price surges. For those keeping score, and hopefully it will be fun at the Gator game this weekend, the August 1 table egg laying hen inventory was 3.2 percent below last year and the smallest for the date since the Alabama Crimson Tide were opening one of their several football championship seasons in 2015.
