Surgical Site Infections
Surgical Site Infection Rates Increase with Obesity
As we are attempting to limit the amount of antibiotics prescribed it is important to note, that a patients weight, has a direct impact on surgical outcomes.
The research is clear an obese patient is twice as likely to be predisposed to a surgical site infection as a result this postop complication has a financial impact on a healthcare facility, costing twice as much compared to a patient who is not obese.
Limiting surgical time and complications for these patients can reduce costs and complications, which is why surgical teams needs to be supported in the operating room.
Nurses and surgical technologists play a vital role in operating room efficiency and productivity, the better prepared they are, the more seamless and precise the surgery.
So lets support this group of professionals by valuing what they do and supporting their role. Why, because they can have a direct impact on better surgical outcomes and reduced surgical times.
Value your surgical team and their expertise and knowledge!
