Recent data from the General Administration of Customs reveals a significant year-on-year increase in China's aquatic product exports. As November marks the peak export season for several aquatic goods, key regions like Yantai, Weihai, and Xinjiang are showcasing remarkable growth.
Pufferfish Exports from Yantai Gain Momentum
In Yantai, Shandong Province, the export of pufferfish has seen a notable surge. On a live fish transport ship, workers used specialized equipment to load cages containing 800 to 1,000 pufferfish, each weighing around 3 kilograms. These fish, totaling 1.5 tons per cage, are set for export to Japan after on-site inspection and supervision by customs officials. Fishing operations began early in the morning, ensuring optimal quality and survival rates for the exports.
Pufferfish, prized for their tender meat and high protein content, remain highly sought after in Asian markets like Japan and South Korea. According to Zhang Rendong, general manager of an aquatic farm, the breeding cycle of pufferfish spans about 18 months. Export prices have remained stable at 50 to 60 yuan per catty over the past two years. To date, 66 tons of pufferfish have been exported, with nearly 20 tons of additional orders already secured for the coming year. Yantai Customs has reported a 3.5% year-on-year increase in live aquatic animal exports, with 3,193.7 tons inspected and released so far.
Weihai Oysters Experience Unprecedented Demand
Meanwhile, Weihai City’s Rushan area, renowned for its oyster farming, is experiencing a peak in production and sales. Local fishermen work tirelessly, harvesting approximately 40,000 to 50,000 kilograms of oysters per fishing trip. Zhao Wenjie, deputy general manager of a local food group, stated that oyster exports have reached 3.18 million yuan this year, a year-on-year growth of over 50%.
Rushan’s oyster farming spans 600,000 mu, yielding around 500,000 tons annually. This includes 350,000 tons of fresh oysters and 20,000 tons of frozen products. Weihai Customs has supervised the export of 300 tons of oysters this year, a staggering 190% increase compared to the previous year. Key export markets include Japan, Russia, the UAE, and Southeast Asia.
Rainbow Trout from Xinjiang Expands International Reach
In Nielek County, Xinjiang, a rainbow trout breeding base has made significant strides in penetrating international markets. The facility features circular breeding cages, each 51 meters in diameter and capable of producing 120 tons of finished fish annually. The base’s total annual output is around 3,000 tons, with exports reaching countries such as Singapore, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
The local glacier meltwater, consistently below 20°C, creates an ideal environment for rainbow trout farming. The production cycle from fry to market-ready fish takes approximately three years. To maintain freshness, rainbow trout are swiftly processed after harvest. Workers at a nearby processing plant skillfully handle tasks such as slicing, peeling, and freezing using liquid nitrogen technology. This year alone, nearly 2,000 tons of rainbow trout have been processed, a significant increase from previous years. Yining Customs has supervised 17 export batches, totaling 138,465 kilograms and valued at USD 910,000.
