Key Feature Findings On My Surfshark Review UK

Broad Server Network

Surfshark recently announced the expansion of its VPN server to 3200+ network in 100 countries, surpassing the coverage of competitors like ExpressVPN with 94 countries and Hotspot Shield VPN with 96. While this achievement marks a significant milestone, Surfshark's claim of being the "first premium commercial VPN" to achieve this feat may be overstated. HMA VPN has long touted its servers in 190 countries, and PureVPN claims coverage in 140 countries, out of a total of 195 worldwide.

However, Surfshark undeniably boasts an impressive array of server locations, with 6 in Africa and 12 in South America, regions often overlooked by other VPN providers. This broad coverage sets a positive example for competitors, as having numerous server locations worldwide increases the likelihood of users finding one nearby or wherever they may travel, offering ample options for location spoofing.

Surfshark also offers servers in countries with restrictive internet policies, such as China (Hong Kong), Turkey, and Vietnam. Although the company no longer maintains servers in Russia, it does have servers in Ukraine.

While some VPN providers utilize virtual servers and locations to manage demand spikes, Surfshark emphasizes transparency regarding the operation of its servers. While neither virtual servers nor virtual locations are inherently problematic, clarity regarding their operation is preferred by users.

Unlimited Device Connection

Unlike NordVPN and ExpressVPN which allows the maximum connection of 6 and 8 devices respectively, Surfshark allows the connection of unlimited devices at once.

Privacy and Security

Surfshark's commitment to privacy starts with fundamental VPN features: robust protocols like WireGuard and OpenVPN (UDP and TCP), coupled with AES-256-GCM encryption. Moreover, it includes a kill switch feature to safeguard against identity leaks in case of a VPN connection failure.

While Surfshark's website lacks detailed technical insights into its encryption methods, my testing revealed strong protection mechanisms. Specifically, my OpenVPN connections employed AES-256-GCM encryption on the data channel, while the control channel utilized RSA-2048 handshake alongside ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 cipher, ensuring robust Perfect Forward Secrecy.

Surfshark's privacy policy provides comprehensive clarity regarding its no-logging stance, offering detailed explanations of the collected and non-collected data.?

Essential highlights include Surfshark's minimal data collection during sessions, limited to user ID and connection time, both promptly deleted within 15 minutes post-disconnection. Notably, the service refrains from logging visited IP addresses, browsing history, session details, or any data that could potentially link users to online activities.

Assessing its privacy practices further, I utilized the Blacklight privacy inspector to examine trackers and third-party cookies on Surfshark's website. The inspection revealed 9 trackers and 10 third-party cookies, primarily from major entities like Google, Twitter, Facebook, and Microsoft. This exceeds the average count, as Hide.me , Mullvad, and Proton VPN showed no trackers in recent evaluations.

Streaming In UK - Unblocking Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Others

If you're fed up with VPN providers that make vague claims about their unblocking capabilities without backing them up, Surfshark is a refreshing change. The company not only assures users of its ability to unblock Netflix but also provides a comprehensive list of supported services, including Prime Video, Disney Plus, BBC iPlayer, HBO Max, Hulu, Hotstar, YLE Areena, AbemaTV, and more.

?I? put Surfshark to the test and found it to be highly effective.? I effortlessly accessed Netflix in various regions like the US, Australia, Canada, and Japan. The positive experience continued in the UK, where Surfshark granted access to BBC iPlayer, ITV, and Channel 4. Streaming Australia’s 9Now and 10 play from the UK was just as seamless.?

Additionally, Surfshark successfully unblocked US Amazon Prime and Disney Plus, achieving a perfect 100% success rate in our unblocking tests.

This outstanding performance places Surfshark among the top-tier unblocking VPNs in the market, alongside renowned providers like ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Private Internet Access, ProtonVPN, and PureVPN. All of these providers have consistently demonstrated their ability to grant access to every one of our test streaming sites.

Speed Performance

Using a 1 Gbps connection from both a US location and a UK data center, I conducted comprehensive performance tests to assess Surfshark's capabilities.

After installing the latest Surfshark app on my test device, I connected to the nearest location and proceeded to measure download speeds using various performance testing sites, including SpeedTest, Cloudflare, and Measurement Lab.?

For each test, I collected at least five results from each site using WireGuard, repeated the tests with OpenVPN, and conducted the full test set during morning and evening sessions.

Surfshark's performance with WireGuard was remarkable, achieving speeds exceeding 950 Mbps in the UK, which fully utilized our 1 Gbps test connection. This places Surfshark among the top performers in our speed tests, alongside leading VPN providers like NordVPN, Mullvad, Proton VPN, PrivadoVPN, and Windscribe.

Given that Surfshark utilizes WireGuard by default, users are likely to experience exceptional speeds without the need for alternative protocols. However, in scenarios where WireGuard is unavailable or when setting up the service on routers or other devices, OpenVPN may be necessary.?

In my testing, Surfshark's OpenVPN connections performed admirably, reaching speeds of 640 Mbps. While this is adequate for streaming and general browsing, it may fall short for more demanding tasks or router setups.

Torrenting With Surfshark In and Outside UK

Torrenting with Surfshark is a secure experience, ensuring your safety throughout. Moreover, all of Surfshark’s servers are optimized for P2P downloads, ensuring seamless torrenting with the VPN.

I conducted tests on various torrenting platforms including uTorrent, BitTorrent, Transmission, Deluge, Torrentz3, and qBittorrent while using Surfshark. Each platform performed exceptionally well, with no significant decreases in download speed. Surfshark imposes no bandwidth limits or data caps, further enhancing the torrenting experience. Additionally, I encountered no IP or DNS leaks, providing added assurance of privacy and security.

Surkshark UK Virtual Location

Many VPN providers utilize virtual locations, where servers provide users with IP addresses for specific countries despite being physically located elsewhere. This practice is particularly common in smaller countries, where hosting servers elsewhere can improve speed, reliability, and privacy compliance.

However, virtual locations may not be suitable for everyone, as they can impact connection speeds. For instance, if a VPN claims to support Hong Kong but uses virtual servers based in New York, users may experience slower speeds.

Transparency regarding the use of virtual locations is crucial for users to make informed decisions. While Surfshark does highlight virtual locations in its app, it does not disclose the actual physical locations of these servers.

To gain insight into Surfshark's use of virtual locations, I conducted tests. The results revealed an interesting pattern: while some virtual locations are situated close to the countries they represent, others appear to be served from the same physical locations. For example, servers for countries like Algeria, Andorra, and Armenia, as well as Egypt, Ghana, and Nigeria, are seemingly hosted in Amsterdam. Similarly, servers for the Bahamas, Argentina, and Bolivia are handled from Florida.

While this setup may benefit users located near the physical server locations, frequent travelers or users spending significant time in these virtual countries may experience performance inconsistencies with Surfshark.

Kill-Switch?

Surfshark's kill switch feature offers users two options for enhanced security in case of VPN drops, providing versatility not commonly found in other providers.

With the 'Strict' kill switch, internet access is completely blocked if the VPN connection drops, ensuring maximum security. However, this may not always be convenient. Alternatively, the 'Soft' kill switch blocks internet access only in the event of an accidental VPN drop, allowing manual disconnections without activating the kill switch. While not as stringent as the 'Strict' option, this provides users with the flexibility to choose when internet access is required.

It's commendable that Surfshark offers both options, as many providers support only one type of kill switch. This flexibility allows users to adapt their preferences over time.

In testing, the kill switch performed reasonably well, effectively blocking internet access when the VPN connection was terminated through conventional means. However, unlike some competitors, the app did not automatically reconnect, requiring manual intervention.

During more rigorous testing, where the Windows service closed unexpectedly, the app prompted a restart of the service, usually resolving the issue. However, in a few instances, the app failed to detect the VPN drop, displaying a misleading 'Protected' message while leaving the user unprotected.

While these scenarios are extreme and unlikely to occur in everyday usage, they underscore the importance of robust kill switch functionality. Although this may appear as a flaw in the app, it's not a significant one, and users may use Surfshark for extended periods without encountering such service failures.

Mac & macOS Apps

Surfshark's Mac application closely resembles its Windows counterpart, featuring a similar interface. While some may find it slightly cluttered, overall, it boasts an appealing design and remains relatively user-friendly.

In practical usage, the Mac app performs admirably, with swift connection times and no instances of VPN dropout. However, Mac users may notice the absence of certain Surfshark features, such as the Bypasser, which allows users to specify apps or websites exempt from VPN routing.

Nevertheless, the Mac app still offers a robust array of functionalities, including static IPs, Dynamic MultiHop VPN, support for WireGuard, IKEv2, and OpenVPN protocols, the kill switch feature, CleanWeb's ad and malware blocking capabilities, and the option to auto-connect to the VPN on untrusted networks.

This comprehensive feature set surpasses many competitors and ensures that Surfshark's Mac offering strikes a well-balanced blend of power and user-friendliness.

Learn how to set up Surfshark on MacOS:

Surfshark Andriod Apps

Surfshark's Android app mirrors its desktop counterpart with striking similarity. Not only does it share a nearly identical interface, but it also offers a comparable feature set, including support for WireGuard and OpenVPN protocols, a kill switch, static IP, Multi-Hop, and more.

In fact, the Android app surpasses its desktop counterparts in certain aspects. It includes the Bypasser split tunneling system, which is absent on Mac, and supports the IKEv2 protocol, which is not available on Windows.

It introduces mobile-specific features like 'Override GPS location,' allowing users to align their device's GPS location with the connected VPN server to enhance privacy. Additionally, the option to 'use small packets' may optimize performance on some mobile networks.

If users encounter any issues, they can easily report bugs and seek assistance by raising or browsing tickets directly from within the app, eliminating the need to navigate through a web browser.

Similarly, Surfshark's iOS app maintains consistency with its desktop counterpart in terms of design and functionality. Users can enjoy features such as the kill switch, protocol selection (OpenVPN, IKEv2, WireGuard), and more.

Recent enhancements include support for Siri shortcuts and the ability to connect and disconnect directly from an iOS widget, further enhancing user convenience.

Overall, Surfshark's mobile apps are robust, user-friendly, and equipped with features that rival those of their desktop counterparts. They offer a refreshing alternative for users seeking comprehensive VPN functionality on their mobile devices.

No-Log Policy

Surfshark has gone the extra mile to instill confidence in its users by subjecting its service to not one, but three independent security audits.

The initial two audits, conducted by cybersecurity experts Cure53 , scrutinized Surfshark's servers, backend infrastructure, VPN configuration, and browser extensions. While these thorough examinations unearthed some security vulnerabilities, Surfshark promptly addressed them before they became public knowledge. Overall, Cure53's audits commended Surfshark for its 'strong security posture' and praised the company's comprehensive grasp of VPN security challenges.

In its latest audit, Surfshark enlisted the renowned firm Deloitte to validate its no-logs policy. Deloitte meticulously evaluated Surfshark's servers, configurations, deployment, and related infrastructure, even conducting interviews with staff to gain deeper insights into internal processes. The outcome was favorable, with Deloitte affirming that Surfshark's server setup and management align with its declared no-logs policy.

This commitment to external scrutiny showcases Surfshark's dedication to transparency and accountability. It's a reassuring indication that Surfshark values user trust and may continue to seek further validation through future audits.

Surfshark Apple TV App

Surfshark's lineup of dedicated app versions for various devices, operating systems, and browsers now includes the Apple TV app, offering users seamless access without any extra charges. So you can now use Surfshark to watch Apple TV in UK.

Here are some advantages of using a VPN with Apple TV:

  • Protect your online privacy.
  • Avoid targeted ads.
  • Watch content freely.
  • Encrypt traffic and conceal your IP address.

Window Applications

Surfshark's newly redesigned Windows application not only boasts a sleek appearance but also offers a plethora of features seamlessly integrated into its user-friendly interface.

The focal point of the dashboard is the location picker, which occupies a significant portion of the screen. Within this picker, users can access recommended locations tailored to their needs, a convenient list of recently used locations, their favorite locations, and various filters for different types of servers (such as standard servers, MultiHop servers, dedicated IPs, and static IPs). Additionally, a search box allows for quick navigation to the desired country or city.

Connecting to a chosen location, or opting for the 'Quick Connect' option for the fastest server, initiates the connection process. A detailed panel on the right-hand side provides users with essential session-related information, including connection time, selected location and virtual IP address, current protocol, and data transfer statistics.

Moreover, this panel displays enabled connection settings such as the kill switch, AutoConnect feature, and the malware and ad-blocking CleanWeb functionality. While the display of 'Kill Switch: On' can offer reassurance, it's worth noting that the panel does not indicate if a setting is turned off. For instance, if the kill switch is accidentally deactivated, the status panel will simply omit the kill switch status altogether, potentially leaving users unaware of the issue until they review the settings list.

Surfshark's Windows application is filled with thoughtful usability features. For instance, if the status panel indicates that 'AutoConnect' is enabled and you wish to disable it, simply clicking the text opens the Settings box at the appropriate tab, allowing you to make the adjustment with ease. Impressively, this can be done even while remaining connected, a convenience not commonly found in most VPN applications that typically require disconnection before modifying settings.

However, due to the array of features and functionalities, the interface may appear relatively complex compared to other VPN apps. While many VPN dashboards typically feature only a handful of elements such as a Connect button, selected location, and Settings icon, Surfshark's Windows app boasts over 30 interface elements.

One notable feature is the Static IP list, which allows users to connect to specific locations like Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Singapore, the UK, and the US to receive a consistent IP address from each location.?

While this may be advantageous in certain scenarios, you should exercise caution if relying on it for security purposes, as these static IPs are not dedicated solely to them and may be assigned to other Surfshark customers.

On the other hand, the 'Rotating IP' feature offers a distinct approach by regularly assigning users a new IP address without requiring manual reconnection. Surfshark claims that IP switches occur every 5 to 10 minutes, although in practical testing, IP changes were observed within seconds. While this rapid rotation may potentially pose compatibility issues with certain applications, it generally did not disrupt browsing or streaming experiences.

Multi-Hop

Surfshark's MultiHop feature enhances privacy by routing your traffic through two VPN servers, ensuring that even if one server is compromised, your real IP remains protected. With 12 available routes, users can select their initial connection server (options include US, Canada, UK, Singapore, Germany, France, Netherlands, and Australia) and the exit server (locations include France, Germany, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore, Sweden, UK, and US).

The prebuilt routes provide immediate options, such as connecting from Texas via Melbourne or Poland via Malaysia.?

However, the new Dynamic MultiHop feature allows users to create custom routes by selecting any combination of locations from the full list.

Worried about the impact on performance??

While testing, a regular UK to San Francisco connection averaged downloads of 960 Mbps, while using MultiHop reduced speeds to 230 Mbps.?

The most extreme case, from the UK to Australia then San Francisco, averaged only 70 Mbps. While there's potential for significant speed drops over long distances, for shorter jumps, the impact is likely to be less noticeable, and even with global routes, speeds remain sufficient for most browsing and streaming tasks.

Surfshark's Bypasser panel offers flexibility by allowing users to specify applications, websites, and IP addresses to bypass the VPN. This expanded split tunneling feature can resolve compatibility issues with specific websites or apps.?

Alternatively, users can configure the Bypasser to route only selected apps through the VPN, useful for tasks like torrenting.

The extensive configuration options, including robust split tunneling support on desktop platforms, provide users with versatile control. CleanWeb, Surfshark's ad, tracker, and malicious link blocker performed well in tests, blocking 91% of new malicious URLs. While other VPNs may achieve higher blocking rates, CleanWeb remains effective for everyday use.

Additionally, Surfshark offers a NoBorders mode designed to bypass VPN blocks in regions like China. The app can activate NoBorders automatically in response to network issues or be manually enabled by users.

Headquartered In Netherlands

Surfshark VPN, previously headquartered in the British Virgin Islands, has relocated to the Netherlands, which falls within the jurisdiction of the Nine Eyes surveillance alliance. While this move has raised concerns among some users regarding potential data leakage to government agencies or other institutions, Surfshark asserts its commitment to adhering to the laws of the Netherlands. The country upholds strong privacy regulations and safeguards for data protection, providing assurances to users regarding the security and confidentiality of their information.

Alternative ID

This solution is designed to safeguard your online identity, making it indispensable for businesses with a significant digital footprint. It shields your information from prying eyes on the internet, mitigating the chances of receiving spam and phishing emails, and ensures the confidentiality of your email address and name.

Customer Support

Surfshark has one of the best customer support in the VPN industry. I like their 24/7 chat support because it's fast and responsive. You may experience delays in email response, especially on weekends. And just like NordVPN, it doesn't offer phone support.
