In colonial New England, the fish were treated like royalty, with the first ever conservation measures taken to protect them.

Today, striped bass remain a prized game fish with coastal anglers catching them in the surf, as it’s been done in New England for more than a century. As fishing tackle gets more technical and refined, more and more anglers are taking on the challenge of landing striped bass by fly fishing. Top destinations for surf fishing include Montauk, N.Y., and especially Montauk Point State Park on Long Island. The surf fishing is legendary, with angler-friendly parking and access to the ideal fishing in the spring and fall runs. Brenton Point State Park, in Newport, R.I, is another top spot. So is the Cape Cod Canal near Buzzards Bay., Mass. For the highly anticipated fall run in Massachusetts, put on your list Plum Island, the Merrimack River, Joppa Flats. Public access to beaches can be limited, yet Plum Island is very angler friendly. The Merrimack River produces nutrient rich water for forage, and the current predators favor along with a tidal flow.
