Social Media has this weird effect of keeping us in echo chambers, convincing us of all the touchy-feelies and has us experiencing things like confirmation bias (where because our predictions come true for us, we believe they are always true.
But today I was reminded of such a powerful and surprising truth that lies at the heart of any successful business, and the more that we remember it, the more successful you will be.
So for today's #SaturdayServing, I'll be sharing this surprising truth and 3 opportunities that it presents to help you smash it in business, in marketing ... in it all!
The Good News and the Bad News
When it comes to success in your marketing to boost your business, there is some good news and some bad news. But it really doesn't matter about which you prefer to receive first, as in this instance, both pieces are exactly the same.
And it's simply this
No body cares about you
Truly.
No one is sitting around waiting for your email, caring about your product or gives a damn about the thing you care so deeply about.
And I know it seems harsh - especially as so many of us have developed such incredible relationships through so many social platforms and Zoom meetings
But it's true - no one cares about you 'like that' - because they care about themselves.
And so while that feels like bad news because our little egos feel bruised... it's also great news and offers 3 really powerful advantages and opportunities for those wishing to make an impact and succeed in their businesses:
1. You get to earn their trust
By realising that no one cares about you by default - it gives you the chance to think about how to make them do so
To put your best foot forward
And focus in on listening and learning about what will really make a difference to them and their point of view.
It gives you the chance to go out there and earn their trust by working to focus on their wants, needs and values.
A powerful tool to ensure that your offerings gain longevity in the market as their not just an idea that you fell in love with, but something that has real value and benefit to others willing to pay for your offering.
2. It keeps you sharp and on your toes
By remembering that no-one cares about you - you are less likely to take your customer base for granted - which can and has killed some of the biggest brands over time.
I'll never forget listening to the then-Topshop Owner, Philip Green decrying online shopping as just a fad. He was so sure that Topshop buyers would always be there and that he could go with what he thought rather than focus on what they were telling him.
So the irony was not lost on me when the Arcadia Brands, which include Topshop were bought this year by online fashion behemoth ASOS. For they had recognised early on that no one cared about them and so they would need to do whatever they could to keep their customers coming back, and they did.
By focusing on that stark, but obvious fact, there's no room for complacency, no sense of entitlement - and they were able to navigate even the toughest of waters through the pandemic and buy the brand from the man that thought they'd disappear without a trace.
Remembering that no one cares, gives you the chance to make them so each and every time. To focus on listening to THEIR wants, anticipating THEIR needs and considering what would be of most value to them.
3. Your mistakes are huge to you, but rarely so to others
The most beneficial opportunity to this entire consideration of 'no-one caring about you' is the fact that your mistakes aren't nearly as important to everyone else as they are to you.
Yes, they feel mortifying in the moment
Yes, we're now in the day and age where anything can be screenshot and posted online
But honestly, it's incredibly comforting to remember that while your mistakes occupy 100% of your view-shot in that moment, it's rare for it to do the same for others.
Some will be a big deal for a moment or two
Many more won't be at all.
Because people are far too busy caring about and worrying about their own mistakes than they are about yours...
So that gives you a real opportunity to really put yourself out there more, be more visible and take more risks
After all - no one caring about you means that far fewer of them are noted or weaponised in the way we dread anyway.
That should give us a real sense of renewed boldness and courage, as we are essentially our own biggest audiences - with far fewer people waiting to point the finger than we first feared.
So in summary
Remembering that no one cares about you is a delicious blank slate that you start with every time you want to make an impact. It means you stop expecting everyone to come your way, and damn well make sure that they do
By turning your focus to
- Listening and responding to their needs
- Focusing on connection in your communications
- Considering how to ease their points of pain
It gives you incredible power to give them the opportunity to care - not through 'improved sales prowess' but through working on and focusing in on your own magnetism.
See magnetism is definitely part science, part art, and I was fortunate enough to share some of the biggest and most impactful tools and tips in my recent Masterclass. Feel free to drop me an 'I care' in the comments or DMs and I'll be glad to share insights on how you can get access to the gems dropped within that 'game-changing' Masterclass (their words not mine).
