Supreme Court on Race Admissions and The Effects on Diverse Hiring
Racism and segregation happening in a place of education may seem like old news to some. Still, the number of college students accepted at ivy league colleges has continued to raise the question of evidence-based equal admissions or, rather, the lack thereof.
NPR released an article on the U.S. Supreme Court as they are,
“revisiting decades of precedent upheld over the years by narrow court majorities that included Republican-appointed justices.”
They set out to review current racial discrimination or preferences within the admissions department of higher education facilities, primarily on the filed cases of Harvard and the University of North Carolina.?
State and private institutions have been using the “Holistic Approach” to determine admissions eligibility in a way that assesses the entirety of the applicant’s life and claims to utilize many forms of evidence.?
However, the statistics are not reflecting this approach in a positive light,
“UNC, which until the 1950s refused to accept any black applicants, is now widely rated as one of the top three state colleges in the South, though like many other top universities, it struggles to have a genuinely diverse student population. Just 8% of the undergraduate student population is African American in a state that is 21% Black."
Diverse Admission or Discrimination??
There is a debate between those for and those against “doors of opportunities” to underrepresented individuals. It is diverse admission to some, and to others, a form of discrimination,
“The race factor is applied to open doors of opportunities to traditionally underrepresented cohorts, such as Black students. There is a fierce debate about it, nonetheless!”
While some educational institutions have banned the use of racial quotas or racial considerations, multiple higher education applicants will see a race question on an application bringing hope or doubt for their collegiate outcome.?

It’s a known assumption that you will stand out if your resume looks excellent with notable mentions. Yet, there is a question to raise if an individual is not offered an equal opportunity within higher education, what are they to expect when they reach the job market??
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion hiring tools are thankfully becoming a new normal for large corporations such as Rippling, Etsy, and Exploding Kittens, to name a few, but without a hiring tool that gives a company an exact breakdown of their diversity score, how are CEO’s leading their companies with DEI efforts in mind??
How do DEI efforts and equal opportunities differ???
We want to know your thoughts.?

2 年Admission to higher learning institutions based on race alone is simply performative and does not tackle the lack of inclusion and equity. Similarly, the same can be said of the workplace. When implemented correctly, diversity hiring should encompass candidates from all walks of life with the express intent of strengthening the overall team due to the plethora of knowledge coming from a multitude of perspectives. When race-based admissions or race-based hiring stops at just that - race - a huge disservice is committed to the integrity of the organization. Additionally, what message does that send to those individuals who "benefitted" from such policies? It sends the message that they are being used simply to fill a quota. What an effective way to tear down one's confidence, cause resentment in others, and avoid finding real solutions to the true problems of lack of inclusion and equity in the first place!
