Supporting those laid off or on furlough

I have volunteered to assist people with career planning for those who have been laid off or are on furlough. My local voluntary scheme is yet to come back so I have spoken to several folk on linked-in and my offer is open to anyone affected. I will share some of the main points people seem to find the most helpful in shaping their thinking and approach to a possible new career. I am going to provide the information in sections and the first is how to focus on getting a better fit between you and your role/career.

  1. Understand what you really enjoy about the jobs you have had or would like to have.
  2. Understand what you really dislike about the jobs you have had.
  3. Create a balance sheet with both to help you identify roles you will be happier in.
  4. Carry out a similar process for your future manager - what do you need from your manager that you cannot do without. What can you not tolerate?
  5. And another balance sheet for organizational values.
  6. When applying for roles, completing applications and preparing for interviews this analysis should help you to focus your selection and help you with your applications and interviews as you will have greater clarity. During an interview at the time when you are invited to ask questions you should have a good list to test the out the areas you are looking for and in particular your manager and their approach to management, leadership and development.

If there are jobs/careers you feel you would enjoy but have no experience? You will need to work out how to build the knowledge and skills to access these roles. I will cover ths is detail in the next section.

I will also cover how to maximise the many aspects of linked-in that can help you find the career/role you really want.
