Supporting second chances in Flint & Genesee

I always enjoy attending the Flint & Genesee Chamber ’s monthly luncheon, but I left the September event feeling particularly inspired. We heard from three different people who spoke about how and why their organizations are working to help returning citizens reintegrate into the community.

Between the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan Department of Corrections, and Re-Connections, we are fortunate to have so many who believe in the power of second chances.

Within the Flint & Genesee Group , the Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance recently started its own initiative building upon the efforts of local partners, including Catholic Charities, Re-Connections, and St. Luke N.E.W. Life Center.

Each organization provides important services and resources to underserved residents and returning citizens. What the Economic Alliance offers is a connection to local employers seeking to fill job openings.

So together, these organizations began teaming up last December for something called Talent Tours. The initiative turns the concept of a job fair on its head by bringing job seekers directly to the employers. Participants have an opportunity to hear from the human resources department before stepping onto the manufacturing floor or workspace of companies such as 李尔公司 , WGS Global Services , Clearview, and Curbco.

The program doesn’t stop there either. It also brings in GST Michigan Works! to provide job readiness and interview training. Participants arrive at the Talent Tours with resumes in hand, ready to apply and sometimes even interview on-the-spot for job openings. It’s an approach that empowers individuals to seize opportunities immediately, rather than waiting for callbacks or navigating complex application processes.

The impact of this program is tangible. So far, at least six participants have successfully found employment through Talent Tours. These success stories are not just about securing jobs. They are about regaining hope, dignity, and self-worth. They are about reclaiming a place in society and contributing positively to the community.

These efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. I’m proud to share that the International Economic Development Council recently recognized the Talent Tours initiative with a 2023 Excellence in Economic Development Bronze Award. As IEDC President and CEO Nathan Ohle stated, Talent Tours exemplify “how economic development can help transform a community for the better.”

At a time when it’s estimated that about one in three Americans has a criminal record, programs like Talent Tours play an important role in helping individuals transition from incarceration to employment and reintegration into society. I’m looking forward to seeing the program grow moving forward.

If you work for an organization that hires returning citizens, I encourage you to connect with Karena Hamlet at [email protected]. And if you know an individual who would benefit from this kind of resource, I recommend directing them to Re-connections at re-connections.org. Re-connections is a great first step for anyone looking for a second chance!
