Supporting Post-conflict Reconstruction in Ukraine

By Tim Arel, FAA Air Traffic Organization Chief Operating Officer

When you fly on a plane, it’s hard to imagine that our national airspace system is actually a piece of critical infrastructure. If it doesn’t work, we can’t transport much-needed cargo to remote areas or bring emergency relief personnel to places affected by severe weather events.

Every country regards its airspace as critical infrastructure. As such, the FAA and our international counterparts rely on each other to keep our respective airspaces running safely and efficiently to support freedom of movement and the flow of goods and people among nations.

To that end, under the U.S.-Ukraine Infrastructure Task Force, I was honored to sign a letter of agreement today with the Ukrainian State Air Traffic Enterprise, committing the FAA to providing support. This is an important step in positioning Ukraine to recover its air traffic system once the conflict ends.

Air traffic controllers, technicians and other personnel charged with maintaining a safe and efficient aviation system require recurrent training to keep their skills compliant with recognized international standards.?The FAA has developed virtual training courses for Ukrainian controllers that will allow them to maintain currency until the war ends.

I want to thank everyone in the FAA’s Air Traffic Organization and international teams who dedicated their time and resources to developing these courses.

Thanks, and Stay Safe,

Tim

Expanding our Tower personnel in the US should take priority. They’re working under a tremendous amount of stress and this should be taken seriously! Too many close calls can eventually cause an aerial catastrophe.
