As the CEO of the patient organization for CRB1 retinal disease and an author, I've had the privilege of meeting many dedicated professionals in the field of ophthalmology. Something I found out recently, and honestly had never been aware of, is that one of the most significant challenges these specialists face is delivering diagnoses of blindness or severe vision loss to families, often without being able to offer any hope for treatment or cure. What I have come to learn in talking with a few specialists lately is that this heartbreaking responsibility can have a profound impact on their mental health, leading to issues such as:
During a recent discussion with Dr. Yin Shen of China, my eyes were opened wide to this issue. Dr. Shen spoke with heartbreaking passion about her experiences. She expressed a deep wish to provide more to the families she serves—something that could offer them hope amidst such daunting diagnoses.
I shared with Dr. Shen my books, Thriving Blind: Stories of Real People Succeeding Without Sight and What I Can Be Is Up To Me, which highlight stories of individuals who are thriving with vision loss. These books emphasize the potential for success and fulfillment despite vision loss. Dr. Shen was nearly in tears, overwhelmingly excited to bring these books to her office to offer her families a glimmer of hope and encouragement.
Call to Action: Supporting Mental Health and Empowering Families
It is crucial that we support the mental health of doctors who are tasked with diagnosing challenging conditions. Providing resources and emotional support to these professionals is essential for their well-being and effectiveness.
